The last Student Senate meeting was held on .Noyember 25, 6:30 p.m. Under Old business a bill to establish the Parking Committee as a standing commil:- tee of the- SGA was passed. Judson Bryant, Chairman of the Finance Committee recommended^ the passage, of a bill to appropriate funds for a dance. This bill which was authored by Wayne Pruitt, Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, was the high-lighted bill of the evening and led to much discusr. sjon. This particualr bill ran into some difficulty, as it included an article calling for a concert to be given which conflicted with the play schedule. ‘ The Senate -decided upon December 13 as an appropriate date for this event. _^jter much debate, a motion was made by Ronn Hodkinson that the bill be amended by deleting the article referring to the dance scheduled for Jan- uslry ^ in the bill. Such action made it possible for a vote to be taken on. o4ly the concert and the amended bill passed. Then, the'matter .of the dance was presented in the form of a new bill. This newly-formed bill ran into strong debate for a suitable "date" for this event. '-Every possible date suggested was thoroughly analyzed so the maxim^ benefit might' be:-realized by the Student Body. One of the major problems pn choosing the datecfor-the dance was that of securing a band, as a majoifity. of the Senators'SeQmed Q.uite destined, and further more quite unflexible in their choice-ofrbands. Some of the Senators of the junior and‘senior classes ai this point were given the impression that there was much lobbying 'going' on for this particualr dance band in discussion and possible that the Sen ators were considering their own personal preferences over that of the Student Eqdy. Those Senators who voted against the bill were as follows; i ■ ' The reasons for these Senators voting against the bill were the following: 1. The date of the dance follows a major vacation too closely, leaving only two days for the students to make plans for this event. Also those Senators voting against this bill suggested up-coming dates that they thought would be more appropriate, more appreciated, and more advantageous to the Student Body. 2. The dance will fall at a time when many students will be completing semester term paper assignments. > However, the bill x^as passed after much debate and the .date'decided upon for the dance is Saturday, January 4. “, Speaker Melvin Shreves then presented and read a resolution that will be seint to -Krs. John P. Kennedy aclmowledging the sorrow of the ELon Student Bqdy on the death of former President Kennedy.. This resolution jjis^^presently being dighed by all the Senate members on behalf of the students as well ap the SGA. Because this resolution is on behalf of the eiitire Student Body, and therefore will be of particular interest to the. students, a copy of the resolution follows: _ , T'JHEREAS, the members of the Student Body^of Elon College feel a grievous loss in the untimely death of our beloved President of the United States', John Fitzgerald Kennedy; and; , : IffiEREAS, he vxas a highly capable leadei?, a deyatejd;.Chris^ a loving husband and father, and an American dedi'Cate^".^.*^ ideals set forth by our forefathers; and through-his efforts brought to our nation a new spirit of leader^hip-^and confi dence in world peacs; and T'JHEREAS, he will long be remembered as a president -who found challenge and exhiliration in his position' as he.ad of the • greatest nation in the world, believing ih progress for his country and equal rights for all his gel.low citizens to the extent of great personal sacrifice: (continued on the following page) -
