a ridiculous charge, any way you look at it. Football was mentioned only once in my article, in connection with school spirit. Elsewhere I used the words "certain ath letes" concerning academic privileges. (Some people around here obviously regard onlv football players as athletes; I won der what our basketball players, baseball players, etc. think of that idea!) Several students have argued that I was unfair in singling out athletes for criticism, since EVERYBODY AT ELON CHEATS. This type of reasoning is both astounding and appalling; it reveals why academic privileges exist— because we allow them to exist. The Elon student is notoriously passive; he will tolerate poor teaching, second-rate food, bureaucratic red tape, and an Honor System without honor. Although he can do nothing about the first three situations, he certainly has the power to change the last one. And it must be changed, or cheating will soon become the accepted way of life. To the newly-formed student-faculty commit tee investigating this problem, I offer the following suggestions; 1. The Honor Code should be retained but professors should assume a more active role in their classes during test periods. 2. The present Honor Court system should be retained and a more definite summer ses sion Honor Court be provided for. 3. Honor Court proceedings should be made public; students are better off know ing the whole truth about these trials than half-truths, rumors and lies.
