McLeod On Monday, October 22, the Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 102 pints of blood from 116 donors who attempted to give blood. The event was held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the North Campus Student Union. The Red Cross had set a goal of 90 pints contrasted with last fall's goal of 75 when 99 donors partici pated. Twenty-four participants were first time donors. Brenda Bellamy, Blood Coordinator of the Wayne County Chapter, said she was very pleased with the results of this quarter's "Bleed-In." She complimented WCC student nurses who assi sted wi th the bloodmobile: “They were a tremendous help." The nurses had helped at the fall bloodmobile as wel 1 . Three students were voluntary source plasmapheresis <VSP) donors. According to an American Red Cross pamphlet, VSP is a special type of blood donation that allows a donor to give plasma, a critically needed blood component and the liquid portion of the blood in which all of the cells (red blood cells and platelets) are suspended. When the donor's blood passes through the machine, the plasma is deposited into a separate bag and the red blood and platelets are returned to the body through the same needle. This procedure takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes. Students were.given juice, cookies and pizza while recovering from their donat i ons. Instructors may require that students use the Center and that they have the helping instructor initial the paper. "I have seen a big improvement in their writing," said wildlife instructor Susan Collins. •Employers tell us constantly that students need to write better than they do, so I require written reports to give students exposure to wr i t i ng in the ir field." Students need to make an appointment with an English instructor in advance of the paper's due date. They should report to K14 to be assigned an instructor who may be available either to help or to make an appointment for another time.
