PAGE 4, THE COUGAR CKY, MAY 18, 1»70 ’70 Annual Dedicated To Dean Idol In a recent ceremony, held just prior to the handing out of the yearbooks of Wilkes Com munity College, the book was de dicated to Mr, John V. Idol, Dean of Student Personnel at WCC. Ray Warren, 1969-70 Editor of the yearbook, presented the book to the dean who has serv ed with the college since its formation in 1965. Educator Says Universities Have Given-In Chicago, ni. (I.P.) -Universities are giving in to student protest movements at the cost of intel lectual achievement and excel lence, according to Philip B. Kurland, Professor of Law at the University of Chicago. In an address entitled “The New American University,* Kurland said that too few students, facu lty, and university administrat ors are willing to “stand up and fight against perversions* of the movement: politicization, egali tarianism, and the rejection of reason. Dean John Idol accepts copy of The Cougar from Ray Warren “Those university presidents,* he said, “who are enjoying the peace that has descended on cam puses during this academic year might recognize that it has been bought at the price of surrender.* Kurland said universities exer cised little, if any, political pow er, although some faculty mem bers “have individually played important political roles.* He added that politics on campus hindered research and teaching for both students and faculty. But even the total resources of the universities are inadequate to these ends. Any partial commit ment of university resources to these goals means that they have to be taken from the other func tions that a university performs, essentially the gathering and communication of knowledge by those best able to make the dis coveries and those best able to utilize them. Students Attend Sales Seminar Students from WCC attended the 13th annual sales seminar at the Winston-Salem Conven tion Center on Monday, May 5, 1970. The speaker for this year’s program was Dr. Norman Vin cent Peale, editor of Guidepost magazine and well-known mi nister. Dr. Peale spoke on “The Importance of Positive Thinking in Salesmanship.* Transportation was provided by the college. The group left at 6:00 p.m. and was back at school by 11:30 p.m.
