The workshop was held at the Hilton at University Place in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Jo Hen drix, advisor, was the only workshop veteran to attend. Her staff members were: Sheryl Monks, yearbook editor; Terry Felts, asst, yearbook editor; Thelma Walker, desktop publishing editor; Madeline Gordon, photogra pher; and Troy Prevette, newspaper editor and writer. The staff was broken down into groups according to their positions. Although we were all pressured to meet deadlines for projects, I saw an amazing transformation take place. Frustration cused a group of individu als to band together as a team. I want to personally thank my teammates for their unselfish efforts to help me complete the theme package. Dr. Hendrix impressed all of us with her ability to quickly design layouts. Madeline was a tremendous help with the art work. Terry sacrificed his own project to assist Dr. Hendrix with layouts, while Thelma and Troy work ed on the remainder of Terry’s work. With about only 5 minutes remain ing, we rushed our work downstairs for judging. I was very unsure of how we’d do in the competition, but was relieved to know that we were at least finished. As it turned out, we received very high marks on our work. Thelma, Troy, and Terry saw comments such as, "Great Design” and "Nice Head lines.” Madeline was praised for her candid photo of teammate Thelma Walker who was caught, early one morning, applying her make-up. The theme package received comments like, "Good Job — Shining Presenta tion” and "Nice Design.” Although we didn’t bring home any awards from the competitions, we were winners still. Aside from the expert instructions from the Delmar staff about contemporary designs, themes, and layouts, we learned some thing even more fundamental to a good yearbook; we learned that it requires a team effort and that no one is exempt from criticism at some point. I like how Nancy Patterson, the Delmar organizer, put it; she said that yearbooks are like mirrors in that they "Shine light in dark places. They al low the reader to reflect back on high lights that may be forgotten in time.” 1 agree with her. 1 also hope that WCC appreciates their yearbook team and advisor, Dr. Hendrix, whose efforts often go unnoticed. I’m proud to be a part of this group and 1 pledge to you that we will do our best to cover what you want to see. We’ll try to capture the things that you, the students, feel are important. And, we’ll do all that we can to "shine light in dark places.” Sheryl Monks Profile continued from page i year'old mother of two seems to approach each student as an addition to her family. Vickie graduated from East Wilkes High School in 1981. She then attend ed the college here at Wilkes Com munity where she received her degree in Accounting and Business Adminis tration in 1983. She continued her education at Gardner-Webb, receiv ing her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1986. Married to Randy Call for 8 years, they have two children — Erica, 5, and Ryan, Vickie enjoys all types of sports, especially an occasional game of softball. If time permits, curling up with a good book is espe cially relaxing. But time is a luxury that Vickie often does not have. Though her family is the nucleus in which she revolves, Wilkes Commun ity College is not a distant second. Known mainly as Alan Whittington’s right arm in financial aid, she also works closely with Brenda Jolly in the delivery of placement tests to incom ing students. As if this were not enough, she also works with Mack Warren, Director of Admissions, to promote Wilkes Community College. Vickie does this by choice alone. By helping others help themselves, she takes silent pleasure in knowing that she may have nudged someone down that road to success. She is an asset to the college and we hope she is here for many years to come. Thanks Vickie! ]oe Correll LOOKI BOOK NOOK 10 ACROSS 1 Pitcher 5 book (funny?) "... liltio book. With this receipt you may exchange any book or get a full cash refund if books are unmarked. This policy is good for the first two weeks of classes. This gives you an opportunity to exchange books for courses that you may change or ones that you may drop. We have a buy-back policy here at WCC. The last week in each quarter we buy back all of the textbooks that are going to continue to be used on our campus. We buy them back at one-half of the original price. You may purchase used books at three fourths of the original price. If you have a scholarship, you may charge your books in the Bookstore with an authorization from the Business Office. You will have three weeks to take care of your charges. We not only have required materials in the Bookstore, but we have a lot of fun "things” too. We have beautiful back-packs to carry it all in. You will find greeting cards to send back home, sweaters, jackets and shirts to dress you up, down or whatever, all kinds of goodies — candies, health snacks, chips and gum.
