Alumni Editor Prof. H. H. Brinton. Faculty Adviser Prof. Mark Balderston Faculty Adviser ASSOCIATE EDITORS Sallie McGehee Robert Frazier Jones Smith Ethel Speas Grace Taylor Sherley White Deborah Brown Rhesa L. Newlin Mary Ina Shamburger Address all communications to THE GUILFORDIAN, Guilford College, N. C. SUBSCRIPTION PRICE SI.OO PER YEAR PROF. WHITE. A mere statement of the fact that Prof. White has served Guilford Col lege for twenty-five years, is, to our minds, a eulogy great enough for any man. For nearly a quarter of a cen tury he has patiently struggled in the class room against the greatest of all problems, the ignorance of youth, and outside the class room against that other pro'blem, no less difficult: the finances of Guilford. He lived to see his pupils' children become his pupils; yet his ability and energy as a teacher did not di minish with the years. It will be difficult to think of Guilford without him so inseparably a part of it did he seem. It is not our place to mul tiply words of eulogy here, for nothing we can say would add or subtract from the record he has made, a record written indelibly in the annals of Guilford College. The Guilfordian wishes to express to the family of the deceased its most sin cere and heartfelt sympathy. THE DEFENDANT IS INNOCENT UNTIL HE IS PROVED GUILTY. There is possibly no time in the course of human development when other people's opinions so vitally ef fect the past, present and future as the embryonic stage of manhood and womanhood. We do not hesitate to say that the verge of this transition is the very time when such influence shold be brot to bear as will make them feel the persuations of individ ual responsibility and prevent them from submitting entirely to the ty rannic septre of iron clad domina tion. What a pupil is forced to be lieve of himself that will he be de spite the forces that may chance to operate in a contrary direction. A keen sense of real merit may be fan ned from a mere spark into a beacon flame of self-reliance if the authori ties place due confidence in those over whom they have charge flavor ing it when necessary with wihole some restraint. We are candid in saying that every one is justly enti tled to credit for all the virtues that could attend perfection, until some thing is made manifest capable of thwarting implicit trust and it is upon the side of this inalienable right that the Guilfordian proposes to take a definite stand. We do not, however, presume to offer recom mendations, but only suggest that every one make a careful examina tion of his own decrees and if a pre mature judgment has been formed that the aggressor bury his face in tears and repent in sackcloth, prom ising a square deal based on careful analysis. TEMPERANCE, IMMORTALITY AND JUSTICE. A regular meeting of the Literary Club was held February 21. Miss Edwards presented "Plato's Teach ing on Temperance as Shown by the Charmides." The purpose of the Charmides is to disprove the Soph ists' idea of the importance of tem perance. By many arguments, Soc rates convinces Charmides and his teacher Critius that temperance is not at all what the Sophists have taught. He is not able, however, to give a definition of his own idea of it. Mrs. Davis had a paper on Plato's idea of Immortality. God is a su preme inteligence, a "gcK\d." Hu man souls are offsprings which par take of this source and possess unity as the most essential quality. This unifying force which we call the soul, is immortal. God is the su preme idea or essence of the uni verse, comprising within Himself all other things. He alone is good and unchangeable. Plato recognized a class of inferior deities with God like attributes. Mr. Woosley concluded the pro gram with a paper on "The Gorgias." The first part of the dialogue deals with the nature of rhetoric. From this discussion one arrives at the real subject of the dialogue, namely the question of justice. By a series of arguments Plato finally makes Soc rates show that justice is absolute in itself, not dependent on rhetoric. He further shows that rhetoric is not necessary at all for administering justice. TRUSTEES TAKE CHARGE OF TREASURER'S OFFICE. The administration of the affairs of the treasurer's office has been turned over temporarily to the Fi nancial Committee of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Jeremiah S. Cox and Mr. Henry A. White expect to spend one or two days each week at the college in the exercise of this duty. VANSTORY CLOTHING COMPANY Modern Clothing GREENSBORO, N. C. THE GUILFORDIAN The PARKER PAPERS TWINE CO.
