We attended the Community Sing ing on Saturday evening and we were frankly disappointed at the showing which the college students made. In the first place there were quite a number of individuals who were con spicuous for their absence. In the second place those who were there were either unaole or unwilling to carry the burden of the singing. The community members responded no bly, but the college, where tradition says everyone should be able and willing to sing at the top of his voice, seemed to withdraw into its shell at the first warning of having some thing to be definitely 'responsible for. What was the difficulty? We think that it was not an indifferent atti tude toward singing, for the average student sings almost as naturally as he eats. We lack confidence. We have not tried group singing enough to be sure we can make it go without being more conspicuous than our modesty will allow. We need more meetings exactly like the one on Sat urday night, and we need to come to these meetings with the definite in tention of improving just a little bit each time until despite a raucous voice and an almost hopeless ten dency to flat our notes we can make our college songs ring out in good earnest and can assume the lead in the community singing. As a definite proposition' for devel oping a new spirit in Guilford sing ing we would call your attention to a letter published in these columns last fall advocating Step Singing. It will be entirely possible for the stu dents to assemble on the steps of one of the buildings for half an hour after supper one evening each week and sing over some of the old, old songs until the words and melodies are familiar and we have learned to open our mouths as wide for singing as for eating! There are none of you who would not want to do this if you thought you could. The fact is that there are none of you who cannot do this thing if you want to, so let's try. The college generally seems to have a very vague idea of the work which is being done by our music depart ment. There is a sort of feeling ap parently prevalent that the students in the music department are not do ing as serious or as rigorous work as the rest of us. We seem to have the notion that they have picked out something easy to do while they en joy a care-free college life. Possi bly just the reverse is the case. How ever we may feel about the wisdom of their dodging College Algebra and Trigonometry we are bound to re spect them for the enthusiasm with which they go about perfecting themselves in their chosen line. Having picked out the work which they intend, to do they do it with a quiet determination it would be well for some of the rest of us to emu late. And what recognition do these students, who are our only special ists in college, receive for their ef forts? They are eagerly turned to to supply music for some special oc casion which seems to need some thing else to make it complete and during the rest of the time they are carefully forgotten and find them selves a little outside the ordinary realm of collegiate activities. In this new scheme for step singing is the opportunity for this department to get in more vital touch with the student body and possibly do a little missionary work in the cause of bet ter singing.
