He may not be a "Shylock," but "Jew" Raiford took much that was nearest Elon's heart. Every Guilford student looks upon the coming Thanksgiving as the greatest in their college experience, with President Binford and Dr. Hobbs back, and a victory to close the football season, in addition to the ordinary feature of Thanksgiving. BE A SELF-STARTER Among the many personalities for interesting study is the self-starter. There are two classes of people in the world; those that have to be cranked up continually and those who start themselves. The former are at work as long as some one urges and di x'ects them; the latter are always busy finding new things to do when the task at hand is finished. Some of the characteristics of the self-starter are alertness, readiness, willingness and promptness. Self-starters usually do not hinder anyone, because they do not have to be cranked up to start going. They work without special urging and make little fuss about it. They soon prove their worth by let ting their work speak for itself. It is a pleasure to know and work with a self-starter. THANKSGIVING Once more the Thanksgiving season has come, when we pause to consider the blessings of the year. Jt would be a very ungrateful person indeed who would not enter into the spirit of this festive season. To most of us, heretofore, Thanksgiving Day has meant a holiday, nothing more or less. We never stopped to consider the real meaning and purpose of the day but this is a good time for a better beginning. To even the most indifferent of us. it is obvious that blessings have been showered upon us. We do not need to search for things for which we can be thankful, for they are in evidence on every side. It is the duty of every student to enter heartily into the commemora tion of the day, and make this year's Thanksgiving a real one in spirit as well as in word. Let every one real ize what real thanksgiving means and be truly grateful for blessings. It is no time to remember petty per sonal disappointments, but a time to make others glad. If we remember this as the day of true gratitude for abundant blessings, and help to make it a happy one for each other, it will be a day well spent. This day, as well as many others, marks the beginning of a new year. If there have been mistakes and un kind memories, a lack of gratitude or a failure to use opportunities for de velopment. service or inspiration, we can let them go and determine to build for better things in the year to come. The greatest joy is "the joy of going on." ALUMNI NOTES The approaching marriage of R. Jno. Hobbs, 'O9, son of Dr. and Mrs. L. L. Hobbs to Miss Gretchen Taylor will be of interest to Guilfordians generally. Richard, as he is famil iarly known here, is one of the pop ular young members of the Greens boro bar. Miss Taylor is the at tractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Taylor of Greensboro. C. C. Smithdeal, wife and baby visited the college this Sunday. Mr. Smithdeal is a brother of Grace Smithdeal, a student here this ses sion and one of the piominent young business men of Winston-Salem where he has been engaged in the real estate business since gradua tion in 1911.
