November 24, 1920 Y. W. C. A. Mrs. Davis Leaves Helpful Message To Girls On Friday evening, November 18th the Y. W. C. A. received the follow ing inspiring message l'rom Mrs. Davis: We have been hearing, of late, a great deal abou, leagues—the differ ent organizations thoughout the country, the League cf Nations and many others. There is one League which is badly in need of active members, a league without officers or finances to which anyone may unite himself. This is the "League of Lan guage." Where must the you lg people of today learn the art of reading and speaking fluently? They get little practice in the secondary school; •their practice in college is limited to the literary societies. Therefore each one of you must join this league of Language and every day learn to fortify yourself against a dearth of Language. The study of Language helps, it is true, but nothing can take the place of conversation. Conversation is not usurping time or simply ex pressing an opinion on present day topics. Truth, good sense and good humor are the constituents of a good conversation. Especially among young people the abuse of words is pitiable. To hear some youth make such combinations of words as "ter ribly nice,'' "awfully pretty" and other -'hpshod nonsense only empha sizes the fact that the younger gen eration forgets to talk sense. One writer expressed the sentiment of the sensible class of people when he said: "Words, words, words, I can't under stand you folks, your words." Girls, while you are yet young, check this growing tendency to lan guage bordering onto profanity. Show intelligence and sound com mon sense. This does not mean that you must suppress your wit but rather by obliterating foul and fool ish words, cultivate your wit to the highest degree. And finally, "What are first, whatsoever things are pure, soever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things whatsoever things are lovely, whatso ever things are of good report. If there be any virtue and if there be any praise think on these things." MISS SUNDEAN VISITS Y. W. C A On Friday evening, November 18th Miss Winnie Sundean of Greensboro College for Women spoke to the girls of the Y. W. C. A. She was especially welcome since she is the undergraduate Field Representative of the South Atlantic Field. Her talk in the brief was as follows: Girls, what we are striving for in America is more Christian woman citizenship. It is therefore the duty and privilege of the Y. W. C. A. to give to its girls what they are wanting—a higher purpose to which to aim. Now that women may vote it is up to them to do all in their power to purify politics and work for a higher citizenship than has ex isted in the past. Miss Sundean talked to the cabinet after this meeting, also, urging it to make the prayer meeting of the Y. W. C. A., applicable to the daily lives of its members and ask ing that the girls be given the priv ilege of choosing their Sunday School text books rather than study those which have been chosen by others. In this way their religion can be more practical.
