Page 2 Nominees For Editor Of The Guiifordian Give Their Views AL JAFFEE A newspaper is the backbone of a school. With this short formula as my motto, I intend to mold the present Guiifordian into a strong powerful force that will be heeded to by the students, the faculty, and the administration. With over two years of newspaper experi ence behind me, it is my intent, to develop a newspaper that stu dents will be proud to read, in stead of using it to reline their wastepap*er basket. I certainly do not promise that the Guiifordian will reach its peak in a matter of a few issues. It will take time and student sup port to reach its top level. The only reason the paper fell below par this year was because of the lack of student interest in work ing on the newspaper. If you give me the necessary support, I'll do more than my share to edit the Guiifordian. My platform consists of three simple and concise points: 1) Increase the size of the news paper to allow more articles to appear. 2) Have guaranteed weekly is sues, with at least three special issues during the year. These will be special Christmas, April Fool's, and Graduation editions. 3) Decrease the number of ad vertisements to allow for more space to be devoted to necessary news. Important! I appreciate the trust placed in me as a candidate for this important office. If I am elected, there are several things I hope to accomplish. Only a few years ago the Guii fordian stopped being published entirely. Since then it has gradu ally been built up to the fine newspaper that exists today. Last year the Guiifordian was made a weekly publication and continued that way this year. So, you see, the Guiifordian in the last several years has improved each year. I would try to improve it still more. Even though the paper has been improved a great deal, it still doesn't have the support and the interest of the student body that 1 think should be behind it. The Guiifordian is a paper for the alumni and administration of Guilford College as well as the students, but it is mainly a paper of and for the students. There fore, I believe that it should con tain news and articles that would be more interesting to the student body. It would be my desire to discover what the students want in their newspaper and print it as nearly as is possible. Another thing I would like to do is get more student participa tion in the writing of the Guii fordian. The staff at present is too small and only a few people do all the work; it should be larger. However, one does not have to be a member of the staff to write for the Guiifordian. Any student who wishes to may write an ar ticle and have it printed in the paper. I should like to see more of this done. As a final word, I want to say that if I am not elected editor, I still intend to serve on the Guii fordian staff and give it my full support. 808 STANGER The Guilfordia n has been a con sistently poor reading and poorly rated newspaper. I feel that an almost complete revision would be the best means of improve ment. The task of improving the paper should begin on the editorial page. The editorial pblicy of the Guil fordian has been conspicuously non-assertive. Positiveness is a necessary quality in any editorial column and one that I should try to implant on page two of the Guiljordian. News items however, would be presented factually with no opinion displayed. It has oc curred to me many times that there is a need for an editorial on the sports page. This would per mit the sports editor to air his views and report news objective ly. More active iXarticipation by the student body would be en couraged by guest editorials with by-lines for the guest editors. I would also like to attempt a "Let ters to the Editor" section, where students and faculty members could express personal feelings. The entertainment value of the Guiljordian has been reduced to "Arnold." By eliminating super fluous articles, we could devote their space to original and per haps syndicated articles which would create enough interest among the students to be read. Additional space would be re quired by adding new articles. This could be allotted by cutting down on the amount of advertis ing, which at present covers 25% of the newspaper, or one of the four pages. Creative writing has been missing from the Guiljord ian and should definitely be en couraged, both from the staff and the students at large.
