Cfje §uiltortrian 2 This week on campus NEWS BEAT Panel on sport & spirituality Shirl Hoffman, Head of UNCG's Dept. of Exercise and Sport Sci ence, will join in a panel discus sion with Guilford faculty, Gayle Currie, Jeannie King, Mike Ketchum, and Mike Welch. A nationally recognized authority and author on the subject of religion and athletics, Hoffman is critical of what he has dubbed "muscular Chrisitianity" and "pigskin piety." The panel discussion wil 1 be held 7:30 p.m., Monday, Apr. 12, in the Gallery. Quaker deci sion making Barbara Jefferson, a doctoral candidate at Pitzer College study ing Quaker decision-making, will talk about her impressions of Quaker process at Quaker col leges she has been visiting. Her brown bag discussion on Friday, Apr. 16, in The Hut, follows a week spent on the Guilford campus. All are welcome to attend. Swinging singles-fewer next year Next academic year, Guilford will be offering fewer single rooms than are used this year. Presidential hOSCT will be get ting roommates for the next year, and many students who petitioned for single rooms were turned down. According to Provost Dan Poteet, "The residencehalls are de signed to consist primarily of doubles. Collegerevenue estimates are based on that assumption. So this is a return to a practice that really should have been in effect over the years. "The need for money" prompted the change in housing, Poteet said. "Revenue needs require that the college be less casual about this practice." "It's philosophically important to the campus. Photo be Ben Cadburv Senate Digest Brian Sugloka Senate Secretary A proposed new publication, as well as several special re quests, were among the issues discussed in Senate this week. The proposed constitution for The Guilford Review was passed out and examined. Several stu dents who support the proposal were on hand to answer ques tions. The proposal would revive a magazine that in the past served primarily as a faculty discus sion forum. The new magazine would be published monthly and would offer in-depth articles written Week at the Hut Friday, Apr. 9 Good Friday noon Brown Bag lunch on Eas ter. 8:00 p.m. GCROEggDyeing cel ebration. News by Guilford students, faculty, ad ministrators, and others associated with the college. The proposal will be considered at the next Senate meeting on April 7. Among the issues that are likely to be raised are whether the publi cation might overlap with the Guil fordian, the possible cost of fund ing the new publication, and how writers will be found to fill the issues. The Support Services Appre ciation will take place April 13. The day will be in honor of the maintenance, housekeeping, and food services staff. Food and drinks will be available in Boren Lounge at 2:00. There were two special requests brought to Senate this week. One was for $1,806 and was from the African American Cultural Soci ety for their annual Sarah Curwood Memorial dance. The other request was for a $406 loan to the Friends of Lesbians and Sunday, Apr. 11 Easter Orthodox Palm Sunday 6:30 a.m. Easter sunrise service. Lake. Monday, Apr. 12 noon GCRO meeting. Hobbs caf. 9:00 p.m. Prayer Seekers Session. Gays. FLAG will use the money to buy T-shirts and resell them at a profit. In Student Loan Fund Auc tion news, Pruden reported that donations are continuing to mount. Senators were asked to volun teer their time to help set up for the auction and to sell tickets at a table in Founders. Pruden re ported that the cost of a ticket is $3 for Guilford students and $5 for faculty or administration. After some Senators expressed concern over having to pay to go to the auction, Pruden agreed to let anyone who has sold at least three tickets to get in free. The auction is still slated for April 7. As a way of putting everybody's problems in per spective, Jen read an emotional message from Guilford profes sor Chris Gjording regarding his battle with cancer and how it has changed his life.
