12,1993 Men end streak, destroy Royals Jon Simon Staff Writer Guilford's men's basket ball team ended a seven G.C. 89 EM. 52 -game losing streak Saturday by erupting against Eastern Menno nite in a 89-52 blowout. Guilford had a 50-21 halftime lead, and never let up for the rest of the game. Midway through the second half they stretched their lead to 42 points. Guilford stayed in transi tion the whole evening and had a season-high 23 assists. The Quakers wiped out the Royals in every category. Guilford's offense was cooking with a 54% field goal percentage for the game. Guilford had 25 at tempts from the foul line and 20 of them came in the first half, where they shot 72%. Guilford produced 25 steals ver sus Eastern Mennonite's 5. Eleven of the thirteen players who played for Guilford created one or more steals. One spot where Guilford has been ailing all year is rebound ing and in this game the Quakers out-rebounded the Royals 33-26. The top seed sliced through their three rounds of competition rely ing heavily on quickness, accord ing to Lemons. In this game the only reason for it being so high was that they did not get many shots. The Royals had only 40 attempts on the basket as opposed to the Quakers' 63. In the women's division, two teams came head-to-head to see which would journey to ECU. The winning team, consisting of Angela Aldrich, Arlene James and Paige Simpson, won two games at 20-16 and 32-30. A solid combination of the strength of Aldrich inside, the quickness of James at point guard, &port£ "We have played really well in January. We lost a game in over time by three. Then we lost by two points in the game after. Then we played Roanoke. We finally got our first win of 1994," said Coach Jensen' Even though this was not one of the tougher teams in the confer ence, Jensen was delighted with the win. and the versatility of Simpson brought the team to victory, ac cording to Aldrich. In other intramural action, McCracken said registration is cur rently underway for the 5-on-5 basketball league. This spring, there will be softball and, possibly, a kickball tournament. A 6-on-6 co-ed soccer tourna ment may be held in addition to a co-ed volleyball tournament. A co ed basketball tournament may also be held, with some minor rule changes. McCracken said that as intra mural director, he's looking to see which activities students like and the structure of events. He said that playing on teams according to dorm is being rethought, in addi tion to perhaps having more short term tournaments. We are capable of winning all three of [the games] coming up." "The last two games we were playing well, but we didn't gel a win out of either. The win was building up in practice and in games. So we had good momen tum going into the game. However, more women are needed in order to fill the team. Practices will be held on the rugby field on Mon day, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:45-4:45 from now until February 4. Beginning February 7, prac tices will be held on the same days from 3:45-5:30. This club sport has already arranged to host two home games on March 19 and 26 and plans to par ticipate in 2 away matches as well. Howard was a constant in Guilford's offense this past week, where he also scored 19 points and had 7 rebounds in the loss against Roanoke College who is ranked number 5 nationally in division 111 basketball. Also in Saturday's game, freshman Tim Wooten scored 13 points and Adam Lamb had 12. Guard Andre Ricketts thinks that things will continue to progress if everyone stays healthy. "We need to keep everybody healthy. With Davey [McCullough] back and Adam back, it makes us tougher. It may limit other people's min utes, but it makes us a better team. [Coach Jensen] tells us not to worry about minutes and things of that nature. I guess if he has more to work with, it will be easier for him to help us to win," says Ricketts.
