Hht (guiltorblan 14 Lady Quakers on the move Courtney Frankhouser Staff Writer The women's basketball team climbed this week to a record of 7-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference after defeating both Hollins and Eastern Mennonite. These two victories came after a disappointing loss to Lynchburg the previous week. The two wins secured Guilford a tie with Bridgewater College for third place in the ODAC. Only Roanoke and Randolph Macon are placed ahead of the team at this point. G.C. 73 Hollins 63 The Lady Quakers trav eled to Roanoke, Vir- ginia on Wednesday to play their second game of the year against Hollins. This game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but due to the inclement weather the game was postponed a day. Earlier in the year, Guilford came away with a forty-two point victory, but this lime Hollins closed the margin to allow only a ten-point win. According to head women's bas ketball coach Barbara Bausch, the Hollins game was just another ex ample of how the team has been struggling for wins in the past few *74e Qo-aJz(lacJz Thousands and thousands of books New Books 10% OFF Recycled Books 40-50% OFF Unique cards, Cliffs Notes, comics Hours: Mon-Sat 10-9 Sunday 1-6 435-F Dolley Madison Road Greensboro, NC 27410 (910) 854-4057 At the end of Milner Ave. Tke Boafe Rock games. Bausch stated that the team has "been on a plateau for about ten days or so." The fact that Guil ford has not been at their poten tial, combined with Hollins' offen sive improvement, allowed the game to be close. Freshman Kristin Schott fin ished the Hollins game with a ca reer-high 17 points. Schott con cluded the week with a very re spectable performance against Eastern Mennonite as well. Senior Brenda Davis led the team in boards with 14 rebounds. The second game of the week for the Lady Quakers was held on Saturday when Guilford hosted the women's team from Eastern Men nonite College of Harrisonburg, Virginia. This was the first match up between these two teams this year. Again, the Guilford team came away with a small margin of victory in the 69-66 win. Though the team played a strong team defense and was more ag gressive than the past week, they allowed too many easy shot oppor tunities for the Royals of Eastern Mennonite. In addition, the offense was unable to take full advantage of their defensively forced turn overs. Coach Bausch stated that the offense would occasionally commit a turnover directly after their defense had forced a turnover. The large number of turnovers &port* has been a key factor in the team's past games. In their game against Eastern Mennonite, Guilford com mitted 24 turnovers. These turn overs, especially ones which were unforced, hurt the team and al lowed Eastern Mennonite to keep the score rather close. Davis led the Lady Quakers in scoring and in rebounds in the Eastern Men nonite game with 22 points and 16 boards. G.C. 69 E.M. 66 Though the games this past week were very close victories, they did help build the confidence of the team. These games were also another step in coming closer to securing a spot in the ODAC tournament at the end of the sea son. Looking ahead to the team's upcoming games, Guilford hosts Meredith on January 26. Even though this is a non-conference game, it will be a test of how much the team has improved since their last meeting on December 3. The Lady Quakers will also be look ing to improve their 8-7 overall record. Following the Meredith game, the team will be traveling to Vir ginia to tackle Emory & Henry on January 28 and first-placed Roanoke on February 2. RELIVE YOUR YOUTH! According to Coach Bausch, her team will "need to take a step up" offensively and attack more for their points. Athlete of the Week Kiley Holder Sports Editor First-year student Stacey Simms has had quite a lot to do with the success of the Lady Quaker bas ketball team. As a starting guard, she leads the team in assists (3.9 apg), ranks second in rebounding (7.1 rpg), and has the fourth high est point average on the team (7.2 PPg)- She comes from a small school in East Rochester, Ohio, where she set several school and county records. She said that the college game is "a lot quicker... and much more competitive. The people who play college ball are the people who really want to. They're not in it because their friends do it." Stacey said that her teammates quickly accepted her as a starter. "I don't feel like a freshman," she said."We [freshmen] have our own roles.
