Spring sports ready to commence
Baseball
Coach Robert Fulton and the base
ball team are ready to take control over
the diamond once again, hoping to
break a school record by being ODAC
champions for the third year in a row.
Coming off a 30-12 record in 1993,
the players and coaches are looking for
another solid performance in '94. In
order for the team to be potent in its di
vision, the pressure is on the five pitch
ers "to throw well and throw a lot of
innings," said Coach Fulton. Because
of the team's loss of four dominating
pitchers, his goal of being a "potential
contender" is realistic if the pitching
staff stays injury-free.
Offensively, Fulton says the team will
not be a base-stealing threat, but adds
that this should not hinder the team's
production.
Sophomore Tommy Bohrer, one of
the key components of the pitching
staff, said "Our chances at winning are
excellent, as long as we practice hard
and keep working every day." He also
likes the team chemistry, noting that
there is a "good mixture" of experience.
The home opener will be on Wednes
day, March 2, against N.C. Wesleyan at
3:00 pm.
The 27 members of Guilford's 1994
baseball team are: J.J. Rogers, Brian

After coaching against Guilford for
the past few years, new men's lacrosse
coach Randy Mercer is familiar with the
strength of the Quakers' competition.
He said he feels that it may be a pretty
long season, "We just don't have
enough guys right now." Guilford will
play against nationally ranked teams in
Roanoke, Washington & Lee, and
Lynchburg.
"As long as we keep working, it's
going to be a couple-year's project [to
build a strong team]," said Mercer.

This season marks the second year
of the club's existence. Last year, they
played a few games during the devel
opment of the club. Most of those games
were against Eno River, for whom
coach Anne Lundquist plays.
Towles said that even though the club
is young, they have a good chance of
winning the state among the four col
lege teams that will be there. She also
said that some non-college clubs in the
state will compete in the tournament.
Men's Rugby
Officers are president—Jude
Crayton, vice-president—Andy Hipp,

The team's next home game will be
April 2 against Davidson.
As far as their season goes, president
Crayton is very confident that they will
do well. "If we don't win the state tour
nament, I'll be disappointed," he said.
The state tournament will consist of
about 12 teams, said Crayton. Both sea-
sons before last year, the team made it
to the finals of the tournament and lost.
There was no tournament last year.
Crayton added that the team has
room for improvement. They can al
ways use players, so anyone who would
like to join the club is welcome.
Ultimate
The new Guilford Ultimate club,
which was formed three weeks ago and
is in the midst of senate approval on the
budget, will begin play this weekend at

sportsmanship which makes the com

Golf
Golf Coach Jack Jensen feels confi
dent that Guilford will do well this
spring, having already played in four
tournaments in the fall. Jensen said that
the team played well in the first two
tournaments but not so well in the last
two.
"The odds on us going to the National
Division 111 tournament for the third
year in a row are pretty good," said
Jensen. "We should be the best team in
the conference."
Senior Cannon Morgan and Sopho
more Jody Trover made all-conference
last year. Morgan was a medalist in the
ODAC Championships in his sopho
more year when he did not make All-
Conference. Other team members are:
Bryant Reeser, Brett Thompson, lan
Downey, Jamie Gilley, Kevin Sagen,
and Chad Evans.
The Quaker golfers will begin their
season at the Dick Gordin-Powerbilt
Invitational at Deer Truck Golf Club in
Surfside Beach, SC. The tournament
will be held the weekend of March 11-
13.
