News Briefs Dr, R. Gordon Spaugli, delegate of the Moravian Church to the World Council of Churches held in August in Evanston, Illinois, will report on the council meeting Tuesday, October S, in Chapel. ♦ ♦ * Dean H e i d b r e d e r will be in charge of the annual United Fund solicitation for the local Winston- Salem campaign held this month. * ♦ » Dr. Grarnley has appointed Mrs. Scott and Miss Samson as mem bers of the executive committee of the E'inance Board. „ * ♦ ♦ Student nurses from City Mem orial Hospital are taking a two- hour lab course in chemistry on campus. Approximately fifty girls will appear every Thursday and E'riday afternoons. Mrs. Tyndall, j the new assistant in the science building, has charge of the labs. * ♦ * The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees met Thursday afternoon in Dr. Gramlcy’s office. * ♦ ♦ The Alumni Association had its regular meeting and clinic Septem ber 24, beginning by attending Salem’s convocation service. Dur ing the ceremony, Mrs. Courtney R. Mauzy, president of the alumni, welcomed the new and returning students in a speech. After lunch in the Club Dining Room, the forty-five alumni ad journed to various meetings. The meeting ended with dinner in Cor- rin Refectory. * * ♦ ' Vespers this Sunday will be the opening service of the “Week of livangelism” at the Idome Mora vian Church. The speaker will be Dr. John A. Redhead, jr., of Greensboro. The service will begin at 7:45 p.m. * ♦ * The IRS is tentatively planning an o])en house on October 9 for the Wake I'orest, Maryland, and Bowman Gray students. It will be held in the Day Students’ Center from 4:00 until 6:00. All Salem students are invited to come with or without dates. * * * A tea was given Thursday at 4 p.m. by the senior members of the F. T. A, for the teachers under whom they will be working this year. It was held beside the lily pond. This was the first oppor tunity for the practice teachers to get acquainted with their critic teachers before they meet in the classroom. October 1, 1954 A Sunday night candlelight cere mony in Old Chapel officially init iated the members of the freshman class into the Salem Y. W. C. A. Y president, Sara Outland, Mary McNeely Rogers, and Peggy Dan iels took part in the traditional vesper service.
