■■ d Page Four THE S A L E M1T E March 9. Salem Receives Compliments From Parents Of Student Dear Judy, I’m going to write the article you Gastonia, N. C. I The faculty and staff seem to be March 5, 19561 men and women of a very high type, capable and dedicated to their work, headed by an able and un requested for the Salemite as a i derstanding man. They help the letter because that’s the only kind girls to develop a fine sense of of writing I do nowadays, and I don’t know how to write a news paper article in the modern man ner. Perhaps I shall learn under Dr. Gramley’s cut-rate plan for education, parents and daughter taught for the price of one. I realized after I told you I’d try to write something of a parent s reaction to Salem, and especially to Parents’ Day, that 1 have known Salem so long, visited it so often, and feel so at home there, that I don’t see the school, nor experience Parents’ Day just as a parent. I asked the other parent in our family, then, to state his impres sions. In less colorful language than he uses—but he won’t write it down—this is what he said. Parents’ Day gave us an oppor tunity to see the girls and the school as they really are. There was no window dressing nor effort to impress us, but in a sincere, natural,- informal way we were made to feel welcome, and the school was thrown open to us. He was impressed again, as he was on his first visit to Salem, with the group of girls there. They are girls of intelligence and fine char acter, representing our best citizen ship. values, to be responsible in their work, to have a pride in their school and a love for it, and to enter into their activities with en thusiasm — the skits on Saturday night were evidence of that en thusiasm. The happy attitude of the girls is remarkable; they seem to be a closely knit group, bound by close ties of affection and friendship. The whole atmosphere of Salem is warm and friendly. That’s exactly the way I’ve felt about Salem ever since 1 was a student there, back in the long- ago days that Patty Kimbrough’s mother talked about. And that s what friends of ours who have daughters there say, too, and other parents who expressed their feel ings last Saturday. In fact, I be lieve we all agree with Barbara McMann’s father — we’re proud to have our daughters at Salem. And now for just a personal word—Parents’ Day was fun. We enjoyed seeing the girls we ve heard Anne talk about, meeting their parents, and seeing again the girls we’ve known before. I guess all the mothers were im pressed with the clean, neat rooms. Only one girl told me not to look under anything, so I suppose no body else had anything under her bed. You let one secret out though not all this staying up until the early morning hours is for study ing; it takes time to develop such talent as that displayed in the pro gram in Old Chapel! We’re glad you have that kind of fun, too. I knew it took a lot of planning and preparation by a lot of people to give us such an interesting day. Thank you every one.
