Friday, September 26, 1958 THE SALEMITE Page Five Faculty’s Summer Vacation Includes Travel and Study Education students take note! One of the advantages of being a teacher is that there is a vacation long enough to do extensive travel or to do some serious studying and thinking. This summer offered various experiences for Salem faculty members and staff. Dr. McCorkje received his Ph. D. degree from Indiana University, and Mr. Denton worked on his doctorate at the University of North Carolina. He hopes to complete the degree in the near future. Anyone who is interested in na tive dances should see Miss Gentry or Miss Samson. Miss Gentry spent her vacation in the Orient observing Japanese geisha dances and Chinese dances in Hong Kong. She also took modern dance les sons from a famous Japanese dan cer, and took hula lessons in Hawaii! Miss Samson, who went to Cali fornia, said the greatest thrill of trip was dancing with the Indian Chief during Indian Days. Another highlight of her trip was seeing Princess Margaret. He also toured parts of New Eng land. Mr. Johansen spent a family vacation in the Pocono Mountains 'ifi Pennsylvania. Dr. White and Mr. Johansen also worked toward their degrees in professional gar dening and man-about-the-house work this summer. Miss June Samson New England was the vacation land for a great many of the faculty. Miss Cash went to Con necticut to the Berkshire Music Festival and to Stratford to the Shakespeare Theatre to see “Mid summer Night’s Dream”’. Dr. White also spent some time in New England but for another purpose: two weeks in reserve training at Newport, Rhode Island. Dr. William White When Mr. Suavely was asked what he did, he said: “Oh, you know Mr. Suavely didn’t do any thing except work and fish.” Mrs. Cummings spent most of her summer preparing meals for choir school and other conferences held here this summer, while Rus sell Crews was cook for'950 people at Camp in the Woods in the A-dirondacks. Would you like to know what Mr. Paine did this summer? How Mr. Sanders gespenten - his . so'm- 'mer ? Tune in next Friday for another thrilling episode in Sum mer With the Faculty, or As the Summer Turns. Margaret Fletcher Jane Bailey Blessing The dining room was unusually quiet as Frankie Cunningham played the organ music for our new blessing. In case the lack of singing was ignorance of words and not ignorance of tune, the Salemite prints the following: Be present at our table, Lord; Be here and everywhere adored. From Thine Own Bounteous Hand, this food. May we receive with gratitude. Amen New Religion Professor Pleased With Salem When Mr. Woosley, Professor of Religion, was announced by Dr. Gramley in opening assembly, there was a flicker of renewed interest on everyone’s face, from Y Cabinet members to acknowledged skeptics. Maybe this occurred because Re ligion is a required course and some of us will be sure to have him, or because we are all a little bit in awe of “men of the cloth,” or maybe it was because we saw an ivy league suit peeping from under the scholarly black. What ever the reason, we are all in terested in what goes into the make-up of the man who stands before us in class with a Dart mouth Bible or in the pulpit on Sunday morning. This is Mr. Woosley’s first year of college teaching. “I’m just a freshman, myself,” he replied when I asked him how he liked teaching here at Salem. He taught, high school at Sandy Ridge, N. C., which was quite different from ,the high school he had attended. A native of Winston-Salem, Mr. Woosley attended R. J. Reynolds. He re members that Salem was always held up to them as the scholarly authority for high school require- MORRIS SERVICE Next To Carolina Theatre Sandwiche*—Salads—Sodas “The Place Where Salemites Meet" ments. He added that he has not been disappointed in the academic standards, and that we have lived up to his early impressions. All you Religion majors take heed. Mr. Woosley is a Wake Forest man, and he also attended Duke \ Divinity School and the South Eastern Baptist Theological Semi nary at Wake Forest. He became interested in the. Moravians while working on liis Masters thesis which was on the “Christian Ethics of the Moravians in Wachovia.” His masters degree is in Christian Ethics and he is a fellow in this department at South Eastern. He is also interested in Moravian His tory. Mr. Woosley explained Christian Ethics to me, saying: “Social ethics consist of what IS; Christian Ethics are what OUGHT TO BE in relation to what IS.” Mr. Woosley is a bachelor. He says that this is an advantage be cause his days are so full that he doesn’t have time for a wife. He For Nice Things To Wear and Relaxed Suburban Shopping Visit asm.
