THE SALEMITE Page Four New Officers Give Their Reactions To Elections Success Nancy Peter The 1961-1962 Student Govern ment elections are over and a ter rific array of new officers are ex cited about their new responsi bilities for tbe coming year. Chairman of Judicial Board Nancy Peter said that she was "surprised, but very glad” when she learned of her election as Chairman of Judicial Board, She realizes that it is a very difficult and very responsible position. Nancy would like to see a new em phasis put on the Honor Tradition at Salem. In connection with this new emphasis, she hopes for a Gay Austin Dean Major clarification of honor offenses with a new distinction between social infractions and honor offenses. Nancy has served as Treasurer of Student Government this semes ter. Initiated into Salem’s Honor Society this year, she was the As sistant Business Manager of the Salemite before her election as Treasurer. She is also a junior class representative to Legislative Board. Vice-President of Student Government As Vice President of Student Government for next year, Betty Cox wonld like to see people other than the vice president preside at assembly for variety. She also hopes for a more carefnl revision Betty Cox “I’d like to see each individual girl have more freedom to take on per sonal responsibility.” Treasurer of Student Government Judy Summerell, the rising junior who will serve as Treasurer of Student Government, expressed her surprise at being elected. She re stated her hopes that a plan will be worked out whereby a greater proportion of funds of the Student Budget may be appropriated to Student Government for its work through NSA and similar pro grams. Secretary of Student Government Dean Major, when asked her re action on being elected Secretary Marty Richmond Susan Wainwright of the Handbook. Betty considers her election “ciuite an honor”. She served as Secretary of her fresh man class. President of her sopho more class, and this year as Secre tary of Student Government. Secretary of Judicial Board The newly-elected Secretary of Judicial Board, Jackie Baker, is “looking forward to next year and to working with Judicial Board again.” Jackie expressed hopes that there will be developed “a closer feeling among the stulent body and the policies of Judicial Board” and that some of the out dated rules such as day time town sign outs be abolished. Jackie said: Julia Carr Liz Smith Ann “Pinky” Saunders of Student Government, said that she was “quite pleased and grati fied, but scared to death.” Dean feels that the “coming year can be and will be a revolutionary year in student government activity at Salem—revolutionary in student participation, in Stee Gee work as well as in the functions of Stee Gee bodies.” In anticipating the reforms and plans for the coming year. Dean realizes that “the changes that have developed this year and those that promise to de velop in the future will bring added responsibility to all the students and their official representatives.” President of I. R. S. I. R. S. will have as its new pre sident for next year Pinky Saun Jackie Baker ders who was “really surprised at the election” but excited about plans for next year’s activities. Pinky expressed her desire to in crease the student body’s under standing of the purpose and func tions of I. R. S. and to gain closer co-operation from all students. Chief Marshal The newly-ejected Chief Mar shal, Gay Austin, proposes alter ations in the system of chapel checking next year. Gay said that she was “very pleased” at her elec tion. She has served as treasurer of Babcock dorm this year, and is a member of the Sights and In sights staff as editor of the Organi zation Section. President of Y. W. C. A. As next year’s President of YWCA, Trisha Weathers would like to sec all Salemites realize that they are all vital members of the Y. She hopes that the Y can work toward maintaining closer connections with the denomina tional groups on campus. Trisha has been an active member of the Y Council for three years, serving as treasurer last year. She was sponsibilities and plans for NSA activities for next year, Enthus iasm (Marty’s favorite word, and indeed, the word which character izes her!) was her most frequently used word. She stated that she hopes “NSA will continue the pro gress it has made in the last few months in arousing in the student body a deeper understanding of their relationship and responsibility to others within and beyond the square.” Marty stated: “First and foremost, I urge among all stu dents a unified enthusiasm in bringing a refugee student to Salem next year!” In accepting her new office, Marty reminds Salemites that the success of NSA activities will be wholly dependent on the support of each student at Salem. Chairman of May Day Committee The newly-elected Chairman of May Day Committee, Ann Cun ningham, expressed her surprise at being elected to the office. She said that she “really wasn’t ex pecting to win.” Ann hopes that with everyone’s co-operation, she Ann Cunningham especially active in getting the I Community Service Projects Pro gram started on the Salem campus. NSA Co-ordinator The only rising sophomore who will hold one of the major campus offices, Marty Richmond, was quite thrilled about her election as NSA co-ordinator.
