March 10, 1961 THE SALEMITE Page Five Cooper, Head Librarian, Thinks Our Library 'First Rate’ By Nikki Althouse Mrs. Anna Cooper, Salem’s new head librarian, is well qualified for this position. Mrs. Cooper received her B.S. degree at New York Uni versity and later received her M.A. degree there. She also took a year’s course at Columbia Univer sity which would have enabled her to receive an M.A. in Library Science, but Library Science was not credited with a Master’s de gree until 1945. In 1958 she studied at George Peabody College in Nashville and received her M.A. in Library Science there. Mrs. Cooper was born in Wilm ington, North Carolina and after completing her studies in New York City was the Reference Lib rarian and later, Assistant Librar ian, at Brooklyn College. She was also the Reference Librarian at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania until she moved to Winston-Salem to be the Head of Technical Pro cesses at the Winston-Salem Pub lic Library. From 1954 to 1958, Mrs. Cooper was the Assistant Librarian here at Salem. Mrs. Cooper’s favorite hobbies are reading, classical music, and traveling. Her favorite type of reading concerns history, current affairs, and economics. She has traveled over most of the United States and is hopefully planning to go abroad this summer. Salem, says Mrs. Cooper, has changed for the better since she first came here. She would like to see Salem grow more, since a larger student body would be able to support a more adequate library; however, she feels that Salem’s library is first-rate for this size college. Mrs. Cooper likes college library work because college stu dents have more interest in serious reading than do most members of a public library. She also enjoys the informality of Salem’s campus and thinks the students are in quiring and mature. Susan, a junior Spanish major, promises “to do my best.” Susan’s plans for WRA include more activities involving all stu dents. She hopes to have more field day programs that will in volve all the classes. President of Pierrette Players As President of the Pierrette Players, Nina Ann Stokes would like to see the Pierrette Council assume its proper functions at Salem. She wants the Pierrettes to continue to produce the quality of plays that they have, and she also would like to see further stu dent interest in drama. Nina Ann served as NSA co ordinator during her sophomore year and is the Day Student Rep resentative to Legislative Board She is a member of the Order of the Scorpion. She has served as treasurer of Pierrettes and has been on the production staff for the last four years as well as hav ing acted in several of the pro ductions since she has been at Salem. Editor of the Salemite That “good ole Salem tradition” scored again in the election of Ellen Rankin as Editor of the Salemite for next year. Ellen ex plained that she is “carrying on the tradition” for her mother, Susan Calder Rankin who was edi tor of the Salemite in 1934! Ellen is quite excited about Salemite plans for next year and, having worked closely with Mary Lu this year, hopes to carry on the excel lent work. That she and the Salemite staff will have the in terest and co-operative support of the students is her wish for next year. Editor of Sights and Insights Ann Sellars, the new editor of Sights and Insights, would like to see an enlargement of the staff. Ann said that she needs the help of any underclassmen who would be interested in working on the staff next year. She has served as Secretary of the Junior Class and is photographer of the annual. Editor of Archway Liz Smith, the newly-elected Editor of the literary magazine, the Archway, pledges herself to maintain a high standard of ex cellence. Liz stated that the Arch way was established as an outlet for the best of the creative en deavors of Salemites, and she urges all students, regardless of their major, to submit any poetry, ■ fiction, criticism, and art work for publication. President of the Day Students Julia Carr, new President of the Day Students, has a Latin and French double major with an edu cation minor. Julia is a present junior. Julia was “real thrilled and sur prised” at being elected and says she hopes she will “be able to do an adequate job.” She is presently Vice President of the Day Students and served as co-chairman of the traditional Christmas Tea. Julia hopes to make some ar rangement for the Day Student Room in Strong during her term as president. She also plans to do “anything to help the day students become a part of the campus."” Special plans in this area include a better method of making an nouncements to the Day Students.
