Page Six Barrett TH« SAL€MIT€ s, "Cultivate Financial Resources December James L. Barrett, director of the new Development program, will be working with Vice-President James A. Gray. Salem College is establishing a comprehensive development pro gram under the direction of James L. Barrett. Barrett is working in conjunction with Vice- President James A. Gray, direc tor of Salem’s Third Century Fund. Although the Third Century Fund has officially ended and has been claimed a success, there still exists some necessary follow up. Presently, Barrett is oversee Registration (Continued from Page Five) —the worst courses. This way, no body’s time would be wasted and everybody would be functioning in their proper places. Another suggestion, requiring a little extra work, would be for each student to set up her own courses from a list of topic titles and turn this in to Miss Simpson and her staff. The class schedule for the following semester would be arranged in reference to every one’s requests. Each student would get what she requested, but would have no choice con cerning course times. This would necessitate weekend classes. No student could justifiably complain about weekend classes for knowl edge is the whole reason we come to college. In view of the gas shortages, fewer people will be able to make trips away for the weekend anyway. In view of the success of the recent “Y” Auction, perhaps reg istration could be handled in a similiar way. Each professor would auction his or her class cards to the highest bidder until each course is filled. This would result in an all out effort on behalf of the school community and, no doubt, amusement as to the type and dearness of the bids. Another possible suggestion is that of the “grab-bag” technique. Again, this would call for the cooperation of Miss Simpson and staff. Six hundred separate sche dules would be prepared in divi sions according to the majors. Each student would select a sur prise envelope from a box mark ed in her major and would re ceive potluck courses! This method would lessen the tensions surrounding planning one’s col lege career and would add the spice of variety and mystery to an otherwise tedious, mundane chore. These are just a few of the many valid alternatives to our present registration system. With a little concentrative effort, we all could delve into this problem and concoct suggestions just as advantageous as the ones I have outlined here. Let’s not be apathetic any longer! ing the continued collection of multiple year pledges. The Cen tury Fund reached its goal but approximately one-half of the funds have not been received. Barrett’s job is to apprise all donators of their gift status, de tailing the amount paid and the amount remaining to be donated. Barrett is also working with Dr. Chandler and Vice-President Gray to formulate long range goals for the college and academy concerning possible sources of financial assistance. “Development,” he said, “is an euphemism for fund-raising.” Barrett defined his principle task as the identification and cul tivation of all available financial support. Possible constituents would include alumnae, parents, businessmen, national founda tions, and those agencies of the federal government which endow grants to educational institutions. Barrett will conduct fund-raising campaigns similar to the Third Century Fund Campaign, how ever at this time no definite goals have been established. “I am still getting acquainted with the college,” Barrett said. Barrett came to Salem the first of October. As of yet, not all of the needs of the college have been ascer tained. Barrett will be working with the Dean of Students and faculty members to discover what funds are needed for what projects. He will then compose a list according to priorities. Fi nally, he will coordinate plans for raising the necessary funds for these specific projects. Prior to Barrett’s appointment, Vice-President Gray conducted Salem’s development program. Before Gray’s service, there was no development program at Salem. Dr. Gramley supervised all his campaigns, personally di recting all fund-raising. Vice-President Gray, however, is working on a reduced time table. Although he will continue to work with Barrett, Barrett will assume the major responsibility for all future fund-raising. Barrett comes to Salem Col lege’s administration with a back ground of directing fund-raising. He was Director of Development at Averett College in Danville, Va. from 1970 through 1972, prior to his appointment to Salem. He worked for six years as Director of Information Services and De velopment Officer at Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va. While serving in this capacity, he was responsible for the entire college BUD SMITH’S FLOWERS Flowers Are The Perfect Gift THRUWAY SHOPPING CENTER 725-0489 Salem Student Charge Accounts Welcome Ws been Reznick’s for Records for Years TAPES - SHEET MUSIC - RECORDS DOWNTOWN 440 N. He has also done some graduate study in history at Lynchburg College and has attended various institutes on public relations for American col leges. Barrett’s impressions of Salem are completely positive. He is fav orably impressed with the faculty and administration. He assesses Salem’s present financial situation as healthy. He commented that a serious repression could hurt the school but it would hurt all schools, as he pointed out. He feels the Women’s Libera tion movement has helped focus greater attention on women’s needs. He believes more people realize women’s colleges have a viable place in the ranks of high er institutions.
