Misc. Page 11 Salem Parking Problems... by Mary Poole In a recent discussion, Steve Wright, the Director of Public Safety referred to the issue of parking regulations as a "thorn in the foot." I think most of us would emphatically agree with him. So far this year 178 tickets have been issued and 32 of those are currently being appealed. Contrary to popular belief. Public Safety receives no money from ticket fines so those of you who brag incessantly about buying the Cushman (and you know who you are!) are actually contributing to "the General Fund." Mr. Wright is satisfied with this allocation of funds and claims that his department is well subsidized without relying on student ticket fines. An increase has been suggested, but Mr. Wright feels that is uneccessary if it is intended only as a deterent because in his opinion most students conform with the stated regulations. The greatest problem seems to be parking on front campus, parking in the historical district and fire lane and a lane of sufficient parking space to accomodate students and faculty. If you have ever wondered if one of your friends is a nark because you get five tickets for parking your father's car- which you believe is unmarked-on front campus for a week, we now have the answer. Our Department of Public Safety has access to a database called PIN at the Forsyth County Sheriff's office. They spot a car, run a 1028 and are able to find out the owner no matter what state the tag is registered in. Tickets can be avoided not by parking at O'Caseys but by obtaining a two week temporary parking FREE OF CHARGE at the Public Safety Office. This is important in order to ensure that if a car gets hit or blows up on front campus Public Safety has a means of locating the unfortunate student. If a car is not registered and parked on front campus and Public Safety finds out it is yours, you are stuck with a $40.00 fine 25- for non-registration and 15 for parking on front campus. So it is a good idea to pick up a temporary sticker and avoid the inconvenience. Overall, Mr.Wright and his staff are pleased with the student body's cooperation on this matter and look forward to an ongoing positive relationship. Sparking International Interest X in ofh.r it iS like tO I by Rebecca Ferrell Remember the great German meal you had last week? Thanks to the International Club, we had our own Oktober Fest here at Salem. Several members got together and planned a menu for Wayne. They also made decorations. The result: a fantastic Oktober Fest. The purpose of International Club is to spark interest in other countries and encourage study abroad. It is co-chaired by Rebecca Ferrell and Anna Moomaw with Dr. Steiner as the faculty advisor. International Club tries to have a monthly activity for its members. This month a group of girls who participated in the study abroad program will discuss the application process for studying abroad and what it is like to study and live in another country. Then, in December, Boel Rydena and Asa Wolgast, two students from Sweden, will be giving a slide show about Sweden. In addition. International Club sells Toberlone candy bars and long sleeve t-shirts with the International Club emblem. Anyone is welcome to become a member. Equestrian Team On The Road by Kristie Reynolds The Salem Equestrian Team competed in their second horse show of the season on October 16 at Sedgefield Stables of Greensboro, North Carolina. Participating members were Joan Pierce, Laura Ward, Ana Sharma, Laura Morrison, Angela Townsend, Melissa Murray, Kristie Reynolds, Holly Hudson, Machtelt Groothuis, and Laura Jennings. Congratulations go to Laura Jennings, Holly Hudnor, Melissa Murray, and Machtelt Groothuis who placed in the top five of their classes. Lee Trotman, trainer for the team feels that the switch from the intercollegiate show circuit to the local circuit is certainly proving to be a change for the better. "Everyone seems to be having a lot more fun with the new program," she attests. The team members eagerly agree and look forward to their next show on November 20. The Equestrian Team welcomes student support at the horseshows. Directions are available from team members.
