Good luck to the offi- You know what? I'm thoroughly exhausted with life. Terrible thing to happen to a 21 year-old, huh? A frus trated cynic, 1 am, at such a tender age. My stress came to a head not ten minutes ago. You see, lam writing this columnat3;30a.m.aftermumblingsome very creative, colorful words at each of the three emergency phones on cam pus. It seems when you pick them up now they automatically dial the wrong number. I'm peering around every comer for a hardened criminal while cersfornextyear;theyhaveahardactto the phone is shn^king *at aJJlloying! follow. fggt tjugy sigual at me. After walking up from the Pit by myself, I decided to drop by the Day Student Center to get change so that I could do some laundry. Guess what I saw. I corked my Salem Gift & Bookstore Welcomes Alumnaes & Friends to the Inauguration and Alumnae Weekend 1992 9:30-5:00 M-Sat 1:30-4:30 Sun comments, got my change and came directly to my word processor to release some steam. So here's some steam in your face to think about. Why is it that the new Commons and our only access to mail now must be closed occasionally in the middle of the afternoon while the Grill is open, mind you, so that the floors can be waxed and can dry for over an hour? Why is it that none of the dorms have any type of ventilation system for those more temperate months of school that we must endure? Truly, I'm tired of being able to bake cookies in my room without the aid of an oven. Why is it that some people cannot drink socially but must become a blithering troll every single time they go out? Ifyou can't remember the evening, how can you know if you've had a great time or not? Why is calculus necessary in life? For those who are more theoretically and globally inclined.... Why is it that in a country of millions, we have not been able to come up with an acceptable presidential candidate for the last thirty years? Why is it that, even though Domino's Pizza gives a whole dollar to the anti- Abortionist fight from each pizza sold, we continue to push that memory but ton on our phones for a large cheezer at 1 a.m. every week? And for that matter, why is Exxon still in business when that shore in Alaska that we've all forgotten about by now is still covered with black goo. Why is mediocrity now accepted as the standard for excellence? Why is Saddam Hussein still alive and not in jail? Why is it not illegal in the United States to abort a baby in the last trimes ter of pregnancy? Why is it that we have stupid things like the Clapper and those weird sand wich clamps that make triangular pock ets/doorstops when a third of my fam ily is dying of cancer and no one has invented a cure? Why is it that I have a friend that has gotten out of three drunkdri ving charges thanks to his resourceful lawyer? And why do the Winston-Salem Police insist on following me all the way up to the entrance of the FAC parking lot for absolutely no reason nearly every night after I get off of work? Looking for the microwave are they? Why is it that I sit here in a nicely furnished room provided by someone other than me while hard-working continued on Page 8
