Thanks To Three Fans Ball Prices Are Cut Wilmington’s King Pitches No-Hitter Against Quakes Righthander Claude King, ace of the New Hanover Wildcat squad, hopped on the Earth quakes Friday, April 34, and when he strolled down off the pitcher’s mound at the end of the nine innings, he had a no hit, no-run 4-0 win in his hands. Mixing up his “stuff” very ef fectively, the big righthader was complete master of the situation the entire game and never once did he get into really serious trouble. King walked six. William Bell, on the mound for the Quakes, pitched four-hit ball fro the Quakes but those four hits, coupled with Bell’s seven bases on balls, were more than enough to win the game. Wil liam struck out 10 against King’s eight. The ’Cats scored their first run in the fourth frame when Louis Tart walked, stole second, and came home on a wind-blown double into left field by center- iielder Charlie Niven. Niven’s hit started out as a low line drive “but the wind got under it and carried it well over Quake left- fielder Ed Vinson’s head. The game, a regular Eastern AA game, was played in Golds- iDoro’s Municipal Stadium. Quakes Take Third Win Over Rocky Mount Good pitching in the clutches by William Bell enabled the Earthquakes to .take their third ■win of the Eastern campaign April 24 against the Rocky Mount Blackbirds. The score of the loosely played contest was 9-7. Jack Burrus started on the mound for the Quakes tout his generosity with free passes was his undoing as he handed out six of the free tickets to first while giving up but two hits. Walnut Street Goldsboro High School sup porters of the local Cardinal baseball club were saved a large portion of their allowance when Sara Hunt recently attended one of the Card’s home games. Sara wanted to get a glimpse of the team in action, but the admis sion she had to pay was far be yond the reach of the average high school student. Unlike most students who were faced with this same problem, Sara decided to do something about it. Going about it in a business-like way, she combined her talents with Mela Royal’s ning won the Game for the Quakes. Draiwing up the petitions was one thing and their distribution was an other, so she called on other stu dents for help, this time Bobby Frederick, Harold Nunn, and Billy Gibson. Petitions Are Signed Sara, and ithe three boys really buckled down to the task of pro curing signers for the petitions, and in just a few days 210 names were secured. Getting someone to accept the petitions was an other worry, but it was finally decided that President C. Ed Worley of the Goldsboro Base ball Club was the man to see. Mr. Worley gave it special con sideration, but referred them to Mr. Nick Geer, business mana ger of the club. Mr. Geer gave immediate at tention to the matter and in just a few days he announced that the board of the club had given their approval on the petition. As a result of the actions of five people who weren’t afraid to work, the admissions were re duced from sixty cents to twen ty-five. We’re Behind G.H.S.! Bell Leads Quakes William Bell was the pitch ing and batting star April 18 as the Quakes defeated Raleigh for their second win within the conference The score of the game played in Raleigh was 8-3 with Bell driving in three of the runs with a 335-foot home run over the left field wall with two on in the eighth. Raleigh got but three hits off the Quake righthander who struck out 15 and walked four in earning his second victory of the season. The Quakes overcame a 2-0 lead built up in the early innings by the Caps sending nine men to the bat in the fifth inning and scoring five runs on five hits ad a base on balls. Billy Charlton and G. F Sey mour each got a single and a double in four trips to the plate to follow Bell in the slugging race. Win Over Quakes Kinston’s Red Devils gained revenge for an earlier season de feat at the hands of the Earth quakes by backing pitcher Jim my Byrd with a good offense and defense in Kinston April 20 to win 5-4 and to hand the Quakes their third defeat of the year. Sam Johnson started on the hill for the Quakes and gave up eight hits and four runs during the six innings he stayed on the mound.
