PAGE SIX THE BLACKBIRD. ROCKY MOUNT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1959 Tackle Knowledge Produces Interest In Fishing Sport Nets, fly rod, reel and rod, cane pole and spinning tackle are stan dard equipment for those who en joy fishing, . and descriptions of these may attract the interest of others to this spring sport. Net fishing is done by one’s drifting in a boat on the river and holding the net in the water. The size of Ihe net depends on the type of fish one is after. Rocks or stripped bass, shad and herring are caught by nets. These fish ran (move in quantities) at certain times during the year and at these times net fishing becomes popular. Fly Rod Fishing Fly roding is the method for catching fish such as bass, bream, ti'out and perch, and it requires patience and practice. This angling is done with a long, limber, fiber glass rod and a line which floats. A leader (nylon line) is attached to the end of the first line, and at the end of the leader the bait is tied. Bait is called a fly, bug or pop- er and is made of a small cork. Trimm/ings such as rubber legs, feathers, hair and paint are put on it to make it appear to be an insect. ^Yep, Ws Spring—Sports’ i Special Day Observed 'Spero Receives Award For Loyalty, Friendship In the upper left the fish looks puzzled as he finds himself sur rounded by things to catch him. In the lower right the batter pre pares himself for the next ball and glances at the catcher’s sign. Strategy Proves Major Factor In Today’s Baseball Games Rod and Reel Beel and rod is used for catch ing bigger game like the large and small mouthed bass, rock and jack. Plugs for this outfit are made of wood or plastic and are painted tr> look like small fish and other things which fish feed on. Hooks on the plugs are usually set in groups of three. Spinning tackle is about the same as the reel and rod virith a few changes. The cane pole method needs no description or explaining, as it is one of the oldest means of angling. W. & M. Whenever you think of Music Strategy is a major factor in base ball today and neai'ly every one on the field and every team uses it. Like speeches and rebuttals there are strategy and counter strategy. Some of this concerning baseball is discussed in the following para graphs. Catcher Gives Signs Today the catcher gives signs which indicate how the pitcher is to throw the ball. Therefore when an opponent is on base, he may see these signs and flash them to the batter When a catcher or pitcher sus pects this is happening, he changes to a new set of signs The catcher gives the sign which means one thing but then means another This confuses the opponent and isn’t easy to deciper Dillon Supply Co. 348 S. ROCKY MOUNT SHOE & CLOTHING Another incident is in the usual pep chatter An infielder says a key word which means he is going to rush to the base The pitcher sud denly turns and throws the ball to the infielder who catches an op ponent off the bag and puts him out. Hit and Run Play Used When a player is at bat, he may receive a sign from a base coach meaning the hit and run play. Tliis means that on the next pitch the player on base will run and he is to do all he can to hit the ball. Squeeze play is another manue- ver carried out by the batter and a base i-unner on third. In tliis the players know by signs that on the next pitch the runner will start for home plate and the batter is to bunt the ball. Many games are won by this play. M. R. Robbins Life Insurance Rocky Mount, C. On special Spero’s Day, Mr. Spsro Kounoukolis received awards from the Monogram Club for his unfailing loyalty and friendship. This c!ay was declared prior to Spero’s leaving America for a visit to his native Greece, which he hasn’t seen since a young man. Ro]and Parker, president of the Monogram Club, presented him a plaque with the following inscrip tion: "Presented to Spero, just our way of saying thanks tjo you for your loyalty and your gifts, but most of all your friendship. Prom his boys of the Monogram Club.” Score Golf Points For High School By Match Playing Point system in high school golf, called match play, makes its scor ing a little different’ from that of regular golf, although strokes are still a major factor. Each school plays six men, di vided into three groups of two’s. These foiasomes are made up from these groups and in tihis manner the matches are played. In each foursome there is a possibility of nine points. Altogether there is a possibility of 27 points for the complete team. Individual matches are played in which a player may receive one point for winning the most holes on the front side, or first nine. The only one who takes the least strokes wins the hole. On the back side, or last nine, another point may be obtained in the same maner as the first. Then the player may get another point for winning the most holes out of the entire eighteen. Next the two players of the four some combine their scores and play the best ball between them for a possible three more points. This means on one hole they wiU count the strokes which both took and use the best score between them for that hole. They do this for the front half, the back half, and the entire course. Half points are given in case of ties. Mr. Spero, affectionately called ‘Spero” by the students, is a fami liar figure to anyone who has at tended Senior High or Junior High or any of their athletic programs during the past 22 years. During basketball season Spero seldom fails to make his appearance 111 the dressing room to bring v.'ords of praise and encouragement. He also gives evei-y player a supply of chewing gum and has at times carried boxes of sugar blocks to throw to the students in the stands. At football games he is usually sitting on the sidelines with the players and coaches, ready to give his assistance to the injured or to any other player in any way he can. At half-time he has oranges and gum to refresh the boys and words to boost their moral. These are only a few instances of Sepro’s loyalty and support to “his boys.” TELEVISION CENTER RADIO SERVICE SHOP 112 S. Wash St. Walter Mears We Serve all Makers jesse Brown Zenith RCA q j.
