PAGE SETEN ^Fire That Old Curve!' ^Hats off to High Scores “A group of teen-Kge ooys filed into the restaurant, each neatly dressed including coats and ties. They were orderly and polite, not know-it-alls, no boisterousness.” Tliis quotaton was taken from the Vi^ilmington News and was re ferring to Senior High’s baseball team. Similar comoiimems were heard about the publication staff both in New York and on the train back. Special congratulations go to the baseball team )j(3cause “wtiethei- they win, lose, or draw, this base ball season, folks in Rocky Mount can be proud of their boys’ good be havior and good manners.” Second sacker Jim Speight cautiously awaits the ball from Golds boro pitcher, Bobby Reaves, as Umpire George Griffin prepares to call the pitch which Speight turned into a base hit. Haywood’s berth was on the first team while Roland’s w'as on the second team. Plaj^ers are chosen on the basis of their all-around abi lity to play basketball, with special emphasis on shooting and rebound ing. Haywood, the record breaker Dm-ing Haywood’s ■ 3-year basket ball career, he has hit for 1107 points to give him a 19.8 average for his 58 games. In getting 1107 points scoring record, he sank 387 points this year to set another record for the most points of any RM play er in a single season. All three years, Haywood made the all-confeireince team by un animous choice during his junior and senior years. Haywood was also league leading scorer both his sop homore and junior years, and run ner-up this year. To fidd to his honors, he was and the all-state teams this sea son. Haywood wfts also selected to play in the East-West all-star game in Greensboro. Davidson College has nabbed player by awarding him a basketi- Rocky Mount’s finest basketball ball scholairship. Parker controls the backboards Senior center Roalnd Parker, who was placed on the second All-Eas tern conference team has done an outstanding job in the rebounding division. He also proved valuable in the pivot positaon with his shoot ing, plus bringing down those all- important rebounds for the Birds who were short in height. This year Roland’s averaged 14 rebounds per game, makii^ a total of 282 rebounds for the season. During his junior year Roland pull ed down 163 rebounds. With such boys as Roland and Haywood, it is easy to understand why Senior High finshed third in the State, even though the locals had a short team in height com- Tennis Team Shines Even though the local teams are oil the short end of the win-loss column in both golf and baseball, the locals have a perfcct record in •tennis. They have downed eight straight opponents to put them ill the top place in the conference. I predict a clean sweep in both the double and single divisions of the AA conference for the Black aiioi Gold netters. Last year Blar- nic Tanner and Ed Dunn won the dculMcs championship. Students Take to the Water Water skiing is the most popu lar spring sport besides the school organized sports. Anyone who thinks that skiing is too hard to master should try it. You will dis cover that after an afternoon of of failure, you’ll be skiing like a champ. Earthquakes Rally in Ninth Topple Birds by 3-1 Score I picked to be on the all-tournament pared with most of the other teams Bird Netters Win, Defeat Goldsboro, For Seventh Tally Bird netters won their seventh straight victory of the season by defeating the Goldsboro tennis team 6-1 before rain hindered the completion of the doubles matches here, April 21. Blarnie Tanner won the No. 1 match, 6-0 and 6-1 as Ed Dunn copped the N. 2 singles, 5-7, 7-5, and 6-4. In the No. 3 singles Harry Felton easily won by 6-1 and 6-3 Larry Tanner swept the No. 4 sing les, 6-2 and 6-4. Blackbird tennis players rolled up their fifth straight shutout victory by dropping Wilmington’s Wildcat net team 9-0, in Wilmington, April 14. Pour RM players had to go three sets in winning their singles matches. e iWandTRUSt^R/VNY” “The Peoples Bank’ Rocky Mount Laundry & Dry Cleaners, Inc. Dial G-7158 223 S. Washington St. Goldsboro’s Earthquakes rallied in the ninth inning to take a tight 3-1 victory over the Blackbird nine, as rain threatened to end the game in Municipal Stadium, April 21. Lefty Jimmy Mooring went the full nine inning for RM, giving up three hits, two walks and adding 15 strikeouts to his credit. Bobby Dan Reaves pitched the entire game lor the Quakes. A bleak ninth inn- hig provided the turning point of the game as Goldsboro scored two nins on three errors. From the second inning (when the Quakes scored one run) until tlia nightmarish ninth, Mooa'ing was superb. Shortstop Konnie Jack son, second sacker Jim Speight and first-baseman Lawrence Satterfield each collected one hit for thp Birds. Birds Win and Lose RM’s diamond nine trounced Payetlteville’s Bulldogs 16-3 here, April 9, but the Birds lost outfielder Bernie Moss. Moss, a speedy, hard hitting player, suffered a broken leg while sliding into second base in the seventh iiming. Bulldog pitchers gave 18 walks and 11 safe hits ro the local bat ters. The Birds stole nine bases and profited from the strong pitch ing of lefty Mooring (with 10 strike outs) and little Bobby ''Fireball” Ellis. Cyclones Outslug Local Nine Wilson’s strong-hitting Cyclones outsluggod local batters and came out on the good end of a tremen dous 19-9 score there, April 7. The Cycs profited greatly from the Birds’ poor fielding and wild pitch ing. Four Blackbird “chunkers” walk ed onto the niound, and four walk ed to the bench. Buck Roney start ed the parade of pitchers, and, due to a sore arm, was unable to hold Wilson. Dickie Proctor, EUis and Ken Phelps followea on the mound.
