Future Chemistry Major
Receives Kiwanis Honors
“Music plays a large part in
my life,” commented Doug
Bradham, Kiwanis Boy for Oc
tober. “I like all kinds — classi
cal, jazz, and pop,” Doug’s in
terest in music stems from his
participation in band work since
the fifth grade. As a result,
Doug is seen at every home
football game at half-time lead
ing the band in formation
across the field. The string
base heard in the background
when the dance band plays, is
snother indication of his inter
est..
His second major field of in
terest is the Hi-Noc-Ar. Not
only is he co-editor of the an
nual, but also he does most of
the photography for it. As co
editor he is ex officio member
of the President's cabinet.
Doug is interested in photo
graphy because it can be crea
tive work as well as a science.
All of these jobs involve quite
a bit of time and work.
One would think that with all
Doug has to do at school, he
would not have any spare time
for outside activities. TIms is
definitely not true. He is active
in the Youth Fellowship of tiie
First Presbyterian Church and
is also a member of the Albe
marle Presbytery Youth Coun
cil.
Next year he hopes to attend
the University of North Caro-
lina at Chap«i Hill where hq
wiU major in chemistry. “I
hope to work m a research lab
in the summers, so that I will
be farther along toward my
goal, which is to be employed
in the research lab of one of
the large firms.”

Language Series Sparks Interest
EDITOR’S NOTE - This is
the first of a series of articles
on the various departments of
RHSH. The foreign language
department which includes
French, Latin and Spanish,
has developed into one of the
major departments of the
school.
Rocky Mount Senior High is
ortunate in having one of the
best foreign language depart
ments in the state. Two mo
dern languages and one classic
language are taught by the six
teachers who make up the de
partment.
New Series Of Books
In the modern area, French
and Spanish are offered to the
student by five out-of-the-ordi-
nary teachers. Miss Dorothy
Craighill, head of the French
department, is really extra-
or^nary. After her graduation
from George Washington Uni
versity, she studied at the Uni
versity of Paris one summer,
After taking several other
summer courses, she received
her masters degree in French
from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. Last
summer she attended classes
at the University of Poiters in
La Rochelle, France. She loves
to teach French but “I worry 1
don’t have enough time to pre
pare the way I would like to.”
Mrs. Evelyn Walston, who
teaches first and second year
French received her degree
from Meredith College. She has
also spent several of her sum
mers studying at such colleges
as State and Atlantic Christian

College. This is her second year
of teaching the new series of
books being used for the first
and second year French, and
this series is “quite different”
from the old.
The first and second year
Spanish books are quite a bit
like the French books. Accord
ing to Mrs. Suzanne Sifford,
who received her degree at
Lenoir-Rhyne, the new books
are “based on the student who
wants to learn to speak a for
eign language.” She also feels,
as Mrs. Hayworth does — that

than the old. Mrs. Hayworth

Mrs. Ann Brinson, who grad
uated from Atlantic Christian

year she only taught one class.
By Christmas, she hopes to
have her classes speaking

Brinson can be called “the

classes are in the same room.
She moves from classroom to
classroom, like the teachers in
South America do.
