A group in our school who has received little recognition but has done much work and has also received a superior rating at the North Carolina Music Educators' Festival Is the school choir. The combined choir which is divided Into smaller groups: the Modernaires, the Girls Cho rus, the Mixed Chorus, and the Boys Chorus, journeyed to New ^rn on March 20 to partici pate In the North Carolina Music Educators’ Festival. After the performance of their festival selections they were awarded a rating of superior, the highest rating that can be obtained. Then on April 7 at RMSH's annual Easter assembly, a part of the combined chor, the Mo dernaires, performed “Ex cerpts from the Messiah” for the entire RMSH student body. Again that afternoon the Mo dernaires presented a concert of general and Easter Music to a R. M. Wilson assembly. This, however, did not con clude this award wimiing cho rus’ schedule for the year. May 6 was the day of the Boys Cho rus and May 12 the day of the Mixed Chorus as the Flke High School of Wilson and the Cum mings High School of Burling ton were graced with their pre sence respectively. Mrs. Antonette Battle, the conductor of all the choirs, along with the combined chorus presented to the public their annual spring concert in the RMSH auditorium Friday even ing, May 14, And as a final farewell to the seniors, the Commencement Choir, composed of the sopho mores and juniors in the Com- WESTWOOD LUMBER CO. The Commencement Choir along with Modernaires will furnish the music during Commencement exercises as a finale to the year. Selecting Criteria For Honors Given To Student Body The procedure in which stu dents are chosen for certain honors such as Rotary Couple and Kiwanis Boy, Is a mystery to many. First of all, the selecting is done straight through the principal’s (Mr. Colombo) of fice with occasional advice from the associate principal ~ Mr, Armstrong, guidance counse lors, andteachers. And persons chosen are strlckly seniors. Students are selected for ha ving made outstanding contri butions relating to the school and which reflect on the school and its students. Priority in being chosen for an honor is given to those students who are active in some type of school service — such as student gov ernment, sports, or music. Rotary couples and Kiwanis Boys, when chosen, have the honor of attending luncheon meetings at the certain civic club sponsoring them. As a token ^t, the Kiwanis Club al ways presents a dictionary to the Kiwanis Boy and the Rotary Club always presents a ball point pen to the monthly cou ples. Near the end of the school year, all persons chosen for ci vic honors come together to form a panel—Rotary Couples Kiwanis Boys separate. Civic Club members then discuss va rious issues with the students so as to promote communication between some students and the community. T. V.
