PAGE 6 THE GRYPHON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1973 RMSH Drops Phys Ed Requirement Physical Education, a course which the Rocky Mount School System now requires its stu dents to take one semester of in the tenth and eleventh gra des will not be required next year. Students are now re quired by state law to take phy sical education in the ninth grade. The Rocky Mount School Bo ard, in approving the change, noted that the course will still be offered as an elective in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. One of the major rea sons the course will no longer be required is the general lack of participation and enthusiasm On the part of the students. This results in the refusal of many to dress out for class than resulting in a large number of failures in a class required for graduation. As the physical education Typical Season Opener Gryphons Dump Roanoke Rapids Preston Jones (42) goes up for a layup as Don J(*nston (20) watches in JV action earlier this season. Returnees Key Title Hopes As Gryphon Baseball Begins Well, its spring again and with spring comes the beginning of baseball season. Coach Jer ry Carter is practicingdiligen- tly with his team and anticipat es an outstanding season. Of the 24 men on the base ball team, 8 of them are re turning from last year. These are Sonny Wooten, Hilton Sykes, Tommy Warrick, Phil Ford, Jimmy Lewis, Randy Wunder lich, Larry Daughtridge. Coach Carter feels that he has a nu cleus for a fine team In these men. Last year, the baseball team finished with an overall 15-6 record and were co-dlvls- ion champs. Coach Carter stated “We’ll probably be the favorites In our division.” He also feels that other coaches will pick RMSH as favorites. One of this year’s strong points will be his pit ching staff. He also feels the team defense shouki be good and that he looks for Improved hit ting from last year. As for the other teams in the division Coach Carter feels that Greenville, Wilson, and Goldsboro will be our biggest threats. He also thinks that Kinston and New Bern will have Improved teams. Even though the Gryphons have a great team this year, they still need your support. So let’s get out and go to the baseball games! It was a fairly typical sea son opener in many ways. The pitchers were not as sharp as they will be later on, the hitters were swinging late, the fielders were a bit shaky, and Larry Daughtridge pitched Roc ky Mount to a 4-2 victory over Roanoke Rapids, The Gryphons struck for three runs In the first inninga- gainst Roanoke Rapids lefty Bob Meyer, and added an insur ance run in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets lacked up sin gle runs in the second and third innings, but Daughtridge hit his stride and set them down on one hit over the last four innings to get Rocky Mount off on the right foot for the coming sea son, Phil Ford, Tommy Warrick and Randy War rick scored RM’s first three runs as the Gry phons collected four base hits. Thus the tea cher becomes involved in teach ing the class as well as super- visjing the students in the blea chers. This presents a general waste of instructional time. Perhaps by not requiring phy sical education, gym class for those who enjoy gym will be come more enjoyable.
