Rockets Launch Victory Rockingham’s Rockets zoomed to an early lead and coasted to a 25- 14 victory over the Bulldogs Octo ber 19 at Rockingham. Rockingham’s attack was led by Quarterback David Lunieford and his powerful right arm which as saulted the Bulldogs for 213 yards. Albemarle failed to gather an ef fective offensive drive until the fourth quarter. After four minutes had elapsed in the final period, Fullback David Still bulldozed over from the yard line to give the Bull dogs their first score. This drive was sparked by a 14-yard scamper by Jimmy Barbee and a pass from Terry Morgan to Nelson Smith covering 15 yards. Four minutes later. Still plunged into paydirt for the second time, this time from the 4-yard line. A pass from Morgan to Barbee cov ering 46 yards spearheaded this drive. Both PAT attempts were made good. Rockingham’s first TD came in the early moments on a quarter back sneak by Lunieford. This climaxed a drive of 85 yards. Their second touchdown came on a hand- off by George Outlaw from the 8- yard line. Fullback Settle Dockery scored the Rockingham third TD before halftime. Their only touch down in the second half was by Emmett Jordan on a 9-yard run. Bulldogs Notch Victory Bone The Albemarle Bulldogs gnawed Garinger’s Wildcats at the local football stadium on October 26 by a score of 20-14. Nelson Smith took the opening kickoff and scampered for an 87- yard punt return to give the Bull dogs a quick 6-0 lead. Gary Mor ton kicked the extra point. Garinger tied the score at 7-7 midway in the initial period on an 8-yard run. The Wildcats led the Bulldogs in first downs by 14-10. Albemarle’s heroic defensive Comets To Carry Conference Flag Asheboro’s Blue Comets gained a tie for the SPC crown by defeat ing Albemarle 20-7 in a conference tilt Saturday night, November 10. Due to conference regulations in case of a tie for the conference championship, the team that de feated the other in regular season play would represent the confer ence in past-season playoffs. This means that Asheboro is the confer ence representative, even though the two teams tied for the crown. Albemarle drew first blood in the contest when Nelson Smith picked up a fumble in his own backfleld and scampered between blockers for 60 yards. Gary Morton bulldoz ed his way into paydirt for the ex tra-point. Asheboro closed the scoring for the first half with a short run, but the PAT attempt failed. In the second half Asheboro pushed across two more touch downs with the extra-points good. Congratulations to the Bulldogs for a fine season and a no-quit spirit. Teenager to inquiring father; “I’m reading a mystery book — solid geometry.” I can easily handle the late hours I keep, but getting up mornings is ruining my sleep. work in stopping Garinger on four different occasions short of the goal line brought cheers from the rooting Bulldog fans. The most pressured part of the game came in the fourth quarter when Garinger recovered a fumble on the Albemarle 27-yard line, fol lowed by a 12-yard pass comple tion. Thanks to the determination of the Bulldogs, the Wildcats were unable to score. The shaft of the Bulldogs’ victory bone is “notched” with another win: the victims— Charlotte’s Gar inger!
