'DOGS SPANK 'DOGS Albemarle protected their lead in the South Piedmont Conference by defeating Thomasville’s Bulldogs 20-13 at the local stadium October 12. All scoring of the grid contest was made in the first half. Both teams played a great defensive game in the remaining two quar ters. Following a 55-yard drive, Terry Morgan put six points on the score board with a short run. The home squad failed to receive the point- after. The visiting Bulldogs used the air to get their first touchdown. Later in the skirmish, Thomasville wrapped up their score with seven more points. With five minutes left in the first quarter, Nelson Smith ignited his speed and dashed 64 yards for the second touchdown; Morton’s kick was good. The Bulldogs took their second con secutive win with a score of 6-0. Bulldogs struck paydirt the first time they got possession of the ball. They battled their way down field 54 yards in 13 plays from scrim mage for a touchdown. Gary Morton made a gallant one yard plunge for the six points. Gary couldn’t seem to find the uprights in the try for the extra point. Because of this victory the Bull dogs take sole possession of first place in the South Piedmont Con ference with two wins and a tie. After the 54-yard scoring drive the game was highlighted with both teams using a very tight de fense, therefore, neither team could score. The Bulldogs got the edge on Kannapolis in yardage by a tally of 91 to 31. Because of Albemarle’s strong line, headed by A1 Calder, Raymond Earnhardt, and Ronnie Howard, kept the Little Wonders from gaining only three yards in the first quarter. their tally with Jimmy Barbee’s strong dive over the final white line, which followed a 35-yard march. Coach Smith was proud of the domination the Albemarle players displayed on defense and offense. Albemarle overran Kannapolis again in the final quarter by get ting five first downs and 66 rush ing yards to their one first down and 10 rushing yards. In the third quarter A1 Calder made a spectacular 75-yard punt that rolled dead on the Kannapo lis five yard line. The Bulldogs lost the ball twice because of fum bles but evened this up by recover ing two Kannapolis fumbles, one in the fourth quarter with 1:05 left to play. 'Dogs Drown 'Hounds Cold rain drenched the field as the Bulldogs clung to their South Piedmont Conference lead by drowning Statesville’s Greyhounds 14-7 in the homecoming game Fri day night, November 2. On the opening kickoff, Jimmy Barbee scooted 70 yards for the first touchdown. Gary Morton kicked the extra-point to make it 7-0. Late in the same quarter, Nelson Smith picked off a short lateral and dashed 18 yards into paydirt. Mor ton again kicked the PAT to in crease the lead to 14-0. Albemarle’s fumble on their 1^- yard line set up Statesville’s touch down. Sam Holcomb scored from one yard out and also ran the ex tra point. In the third quarter Jimmy Bar bee dashed around left end for 81 yards to cross into paydirt, but to no avail as the Bulldogs were off side. Highlights of the game included intercepted passes by Johnny Bur leson, Terry Morgan and A1 Cal der. Defense standouts were Cal der, Robert Scarboro, and Nelson Smith. On offense. Smith, Barbee, and David Still were also singled out by Coach Moyer Smith. This was the last home game for the following Bulldog seniors: Co captain Jimmy Barbee, Co-captain Ronnie Howard, Nelson Smith, Gary Morton, Tommy Lander, Tony Clark, Raymond Earnhardt, A1 Cal der, Bill Mauldin, and Jimmy Lorch.
