FULL MOON Volume 58, No. 8 ALBEMARLE HIGH NEWSPAPER 311 Park Ridge Road Albemarle NC 28001 982-3711 MAY 1993 NHS Inducts New Members By Christy Hendrick On April 20, Albemarle High School inducted 23 new members into the National Honor Society. The students are tapp>ed into this society after meeting the requirements of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The junior NHS members are Amanda Pelt, Amy Whitmore, Hannah Oettinger, Lori Cox, Leigh Arm Maudin, Molly Worth, Laura Smith, Ella Lee, Emily Stonestreet, Candy Hathcock, Candace Vanore, Kevin Garrison, Jason Phibbs, Jamie Measmer, Daniel Brown, Jessica Dennis, Brigette Myers, Courtney Rogers, Scott Anderson, Mary Jo Austin, Elissa Freshly, Kristi Kirkpatrick, and Erin Pettit. These juniors have exhibited highest degrees of academic excellence, service to community and school, leadership, and character. Each one has maintained an A- or better average throughout his or her high school career. Congratulations to each of these students for their outstanding achievements. There's Brains in Them Thar Heads! By Leslie Morgan Contest in Febsoiary Andy Miskell, Matt Ander son, Matthew Allison, And Rob Bailey. The Alternates were Michael Laton and Kevin Gay. They did not win, but did very well. Thanks to Mrs. Grigg for helping with the Quiz Bowl team. This years seniors on the team were Andy Mi skell, Jonathan Perry, David Cranford, Matt Anderson, and Michael Laton. Rob Bailey, Matthew AUison, and Kevin Gay will all have a chance next year to compete. The AHS Quiz Bowl team has had a success ful year. The group meets weekly with Mrs. Grigg for practice. Andy Miskell, Captain, Rob Bailey, Jonathan P^rry, and Matthew Allison competed at Davidson College in the annual Hi- Q contest in January. They did very well, placing 22nd out of 68 teams, many from 3A and 4A schools. The alternates of this team were David Cranford and Kevin Gay. TTie following stu dents competed in the Stanly County Quiz Bowl The Quiz Bowl Team and their advisor Mrs. Grigg. Welcome Upcoming Freshmen! We hope you have a great orientation day. See your selves and read your comments on page 5. Time for Change! By Tina Lee Nextyearwillbe full of many changes. Change is a part of life, but the changes AHS will see next year will change the school’s future. Changes have already began occurring this year. First, AHS saw the retirement of Mr. W.K. Morgan and Mr. Taylor names principal. The time of task emphasis has greatly limited the assemblies. These changes arc just naming a couple of the differences in the 92-93 school year. The 93-94 school year will see ever more changes. Coach Dave Holcomb wiU leave AHS after 18 years for retirement The most momen tous changes planned for next year is the pro posed four courses per semester curriculum. AHS’s faculty has already visited a school with this curriculum. Another change being proposed is lock out. Any student who is tardy wUl not be able to enter the classroom after the tardy bell. Although none of these changes are final, AHS will definitely be different next year! ♦. t. I t Wit- The 1993 inductees of the National Honor Society. banquet to Honor student scfioCars By Natasha Byrd The annual academic awards banquet will be held May 27, 1993. The banquet will be at the Agri-Civic Center at seven o’clock. During this annual banquet, students who are National Honor Society members. North Carolina Scholars, or Presidential Academic Fimess students will be honored for their academic achievements. This year’s banquet will serve an extraordi nary number of people. Sixty-five students will be honored. The graduating class of 1993 is a very competitive class. Each student being honored has worked extremely hard for his or her achievements. A buffet-style dinner will be served at the banquet because of the large number of people expected to attend. Certificates and 1993 silver pieces will be awarded after dinner. Entertain ment will be provided by some of the scholar students. Congratulations to the honored students and their families!
