J Basketball, this year at West, has thus far proved disappointing, al though prospects for success look bright indeed. With our first conference game scheduled for tonight, our winning streak should be gin. Prospects fdr victory in the ranks of the male stars look much brighter than in the female roster, but there, all hope has not been abandoned. It is, however, fading fast. Re sults to date follow. Against Ellerbe in the season’s opener on Decem ber 4, the girls came as close to winning as all last year. Final score: 2U-23, Sarah Ingram gave an 11 point performance followed by Diane Thompson vith 8. The boys, on the same evening, at Ellerbe, fell 59-46 before a strong attack paced by Gus Henry. Charles Bruton had 17 points, and Jim Harris was next with 10. Fincher Jarrell had 8, and Charles Crouch had 5. Next game, the girls bowed 48-32, to a height ened Seagrove squad. In gram contributed 17 points. The boys game was no less than a heartbreaking ex perience . In three over time periods, the boys finally fell before Sea- grove's attack, 65-53. Jim Harris led the Warriors on offense and defense gaining 20 points. Bruton gained 12; Jarrell, 10; Crouch, 8; and Pridgen, 7. The girls next two game artempts proved futile. Against Eastern Alamance on Tuesday, December 11, a 6 point output gave Ala mance a 40 point margin, 46-6. Holt grabbed 4 points. The following Frida}^, against Pinehurst, a 9 point performance was given, and the opponents again went home 40 points to the good. Score: 49-9. Ingram scored 5 points. The boys faced Eastern Alamance with somewhat more dignity, but still walked away victdry-less, 57-22. There was no great surge of scoring. Crouch got 5; Harris,3; Ralph Reynolds, 3; Pridgen, 3; Bruton, 2; Layman,2; and Jarrell, 1 point. Against a strong Pine hurst team, results were similar. Although fight prevaled early in the game and the Warriors pull ed within 4 points at one point, the margin widened with time. Final scpre was 51-34. Harris wns su preme with 9 points, fol lowed by Bruton S Pridgen with 8 points each. Comes the night, continues the light. The darkness moves on its wayward flight. The motives within—an evil plight. Something, I feel, is cut of place. Maybe my body—and this cld face. Dancing, shouting, general joy. A girl suggestively teases a boy. The joy of others on my features reflect. While here I sit, sad reject. "Why not join?" That I’ve tried. It only serves to hurt my pride. Lord knows I’ve tried, my self to sell. But they don’t want me, I can tell, "Whet will I do?" you say, "Where will I go?’’ Oh, I’11 make out,j ust hew I don’t know. Wander I guess, is the answer for me, There’s no place special where I should be, My dreams are shct, my hopes are gone, My friends forsake me. I’m a11 alone. But, I’ll be all rigiit. This is just my way. For tomorrow is another day. —John Hodge
