C., Jr.), Durham. Elizabeth Coleman, Rocky Mount. Five Alumnae Groups Formed Three Out-Stote Chapters Formed in Pennsylvania, Peninsula and Norfolk, Vo. Five new chapters, three out of state, since commencement is good news. Ahoskie led the way with its meeting on June 29, followed by Elizabeth City on August 25, the Norfolk, Virginia vicinity on August 31, Pennsyl vania on September 9, and “Peninsula” (Newport News, Virginia district) on September 12. Mabel Claire Hoggard Mad- drey (Mrs, Gordon) has the credit for bringing into being the Ahoskie chapter. She enter tained at her home the local group. Alumnae Secretary Mae Grimmer, Mr. R. H. Hadcock, director of Expansion Program, and Rev. Oscar Creech, chair man of Expansion Pro^am of district number one. Officers elected were: President, Mabel Claire Maddrey; Vice President, Nellie Mae Baker Creech (Mrs, O. R.); Secretary - Treasurer, Antoinette Charles Peterson (Mrs. B. A.); and Assistant Sec retary, Nell Deans Eley (Mrs. Alvin J.). The Norfolk-Portsmouth, Vir ginia, group met at luncheon at Ames & Brownley's Tea Room in Norfolk for the express pur pose of organizing a chapter. The alumnae secretary presided. Dot Beale, ’42, is responsible for the fruition of this chapter. “I went to commencement," she said, “arid got inspired." Officers elected were: President, Dot Beale, of Norfolk; Vice Presi dent, Margai^et Holland, of Nas- sawadox; Secretary-Treasurer, Ida Howell Friday, of Ports mouth. Miss Marion Warner of Philadelphia, former member of the department of physical education in the college (1934- 1937), was also a guest. Madge Daniels Barber (Mrs.), of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, was hostess to the alumnae of her vicinity at a tea at her home on September 9. The group has Beth Huntley Lain (Mrs. W. H.), of Philadelphia, to thank for effMting this organization. She claims, also, that her recent visit to Meredith commencement in cited her to action. Officers elected were: President, Madge Barber; and Secretary-Treas urer, Beth Lain. Special guests at this tea meeting were Miss Marion Warner of Philadelphia, and the alumnae secretary. The “Peninsula,” Virginia chapter (made up of Newport News, Hampton, and Langley Field alumnae) was instigated by Anne Simms Haskins (Mrs. A. L., Jr.), and Mary Frances Snead Robinson (Mrs. W. D.). The meeting, held at the home of Dr. Snead in Newport News, though primarily for organization, was also a party. Officers elected were: President, Mary Frances Robinson, of Newport News; Vice President, Elaine Goode Saunders (Mrs. Chas. E.), of Newport News; Secretary-Treas- urer, Anne Haskins, of Hampton. A scrap book committee, com posed of Betty Lou Anderson and Jerry Couch, both of Lang ley Field, was appointed by the newly elected president. After the business the group was in vited to the dining room. Anne Haskins dipped punch, and Mae Grimmer cut the cake which was decorated in red letters with the words, “Meredith Alumnae.” ACTIVE ALUMNAE CHAIN LENGTHENING Loyalty Fund Chairman Lois Stafford Kelly reports she is ex pecting a landslide in active memberships this fall. Nine members and President Camp bell attended. Included in plans for the year was the Chapter Presidents’ meeting to be held at the college on Saturday, Sep tember 30.
