Page Pour THE TWIG September 30,1944 WHAT DO you THINK OF MEREDITH? By Florine Ledford To an upperclassman, the ideas, opinions, and first impres sions of freshmen and new stu dents are always extremely in teresting. Since our chief aim at Meredith is to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually, these opinions and ideas are good source material upon which we here at Meredith can build. Below several freshmen have submitted to The Twig their comments on various phases of Meredith both for the pleasure and the aid that might be de rived from them. Beyond the wide expanse of the front campus, the columns of Johnson Hall spire like six invincible sentinels. Towering there, they capture the first rays of sunlight that slowly raise the soft, gray veil of once somber clouds. The grooves and flutings of the columns, softened by the play of light and shade, empha size their buoyant dignity and support. This statuary grace and beauty of the colonnades makes a pleasing contrast against the plain background of red brick, the slowly clearing sky, and the fresh green of late summer. This is beauty in itself, because it has a reason, a necessity; beauty that strikes your eyes and then your heart. Jean Bradley. The thing about Meredith which strikes me most is her honor system. In other schools, too often, I think, the honor system is, in the beginning, a mere farce. Meredith makes her honor system a real one; and, as a result, complete honesty and all its benefits are instilled into each student. Janet Rosser. A citadel surrounded by sturdy, protective evergreens, guarded by four inviting stone benches, the proud perfect foun tain at the intersection of the four paths which may well rep resent the highroads of the earth, North, South, East, ’and West, is the most outstanding thing I have seen on the Mere dith College campus. Bobbie White. Never have I seen such friend liness in an institution, such as at Meredith College! From the day my application came in and was approved until the day I actually entered the college, I received uncountable letters from the heads of the various activities, together with wel comes from some of the other students, all indicating that they were glad I was to become a student here. I can think of no better method of enticing a stu dent to begin really to love her new surroundings than showing her the kindness and friendliness which those letters certainly did. Everyway one turns, there is always a cheery “hello” or “please come by to see me.” There is little wonder, then, that Meredith students sincerely love their new home. Louise Vila. The thing that has impressed me more than anything else about Meredith College is the spirit of the school. Even before I came, I was surprised and de lighted by the number of letters which I received from the various organizations, the churches, and the girls them selves. I felt that they wanted me and would welcome me, and all of us freshmen here at Mere dith. I felt as though I were really a part of Meredith and that someone was really in terested in me. It was a wonder ful feeling and since I have been here, it has been an equally won derful experience. Laura Stroupe. Aside from beauty, I find that it is arranged to bring about the utmost utility to the student. Norma Cartwright. Are you always going places or doing things behind time? Maybe up to now many of us freshman have. Now’s the op portunity to alter all that. How I do like the way things are planned here! We have just so much time for this and so much for that. Tm sure that I, for one, will certainly, after a lew weeks of this regularity, be a better person altogether. For instance, everyone ought to have a better disposition and be more prepared to face the next day if she knows what she’s expected to accomplish. Mary Louise Milliken. When I entered Meredith I observed one thing in particular about the college that appealed to me very much. That was the campus itself. To me, it is much easier to do better work, to think more clearly, when the sur roundings are pleasant ones. By this, I mean that I like to look out of a window when I am thinking and see a well-kept lawn, green grass, beautiful shrubbery and flowers, and plenty of trees. Meredith has this and I have found already that I can do much better work than if I were confronted by a dirty yard with no grass, shrub bery, flowers, or trees but plenty of paper and ashes strewn hither and yonder. Mary Riddle. Not only is Meredith a won derful place for friendship and associations with other people— real people, it is an inspiration to anyone’s life. Somehow it gives you renewed strength, and courage to go on. Meredith is truly, a place where we meet God. Anonymous. I like the little porches which join the halls. It makes it seem as though all of it is just one big home. The porches look so nice and it’s a very good place to gather to chat. I like the court too. Its simplicity and grace bring a peaceful and wonderful feeling to you, especially if you are a freshman. Elizabeth Emory.
