September 30, THE T WiO Page Five MARRIES On Thursday, Septerab^ 21, Miss Cleo Mitchell, former B.S.U. Student Secretary on the Meredith campus and former re ligion teacher, was married to Dr. R. E. Edwin Espy of New York City. Dr. Espy, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Espy of Oysterville, Wash., is connected with the National Y.M.C.A. Members of the Meredith B.S.U. Council serv^ as honor ary bridesmaids and included the following Meredith stu dents: Milly Thornton, Mary Kathryn Monteith, Jo Hughes, Elizabeth Shelton, Betsy Paul Yelverton, Helen Beckwith, Margaret Hines, Doris Gene Bowman, Lois Edinger, Dot Bowman, Dot Loftin, Laura Frances Snow, and Virginia Highfill. BSU Banquet Held Wednesday On Wednesday evening, Sep tember 27, the B.S.U. sponsored a banquet in the dining hall for the entire student body. The theme of the banquet was “Salesman's Convention for B.S.U. Products.” Speakers at the occasion were Harvey T. Gibson, State Training Union Secretary; L. L. Morgan, State Sunday School Secretary; Miss Kathryn Abee, Young People’s Secretary of the State W.M.U.; and R. T. “Dick” Howerton, Jr., State Student Union Secretary. Virginia HishAll acted as chair man of the food committee, Lois Edinger served as chairman of the decorations, and Jo Hughes presided as master of cere monies. Sports Calendar An announcement from the Athletic Association: This week marks the begin ning of the sports calendar for the year. Geneva Witherspoon, manager of hockey, is looking forward to having a large num ber of girls out for this activity. Practices will be^n this week. After the business was dispensed with, a film was shown to the members. Tomorrow’s Business Women Tomorrow’s Business Wom en's Club held its first meeting Fridav, September 22, at five o’clock in the Rotunda. It was decided that the Serv ice Bureau would be continued this year. The bureau accom modates all students and faculty members who wish to have typ ing end mimeographing done. l^Hl, ASTRO SOCIETIES (OoQttaued from page one) 27 at Allen's Pond. Dorothy Shealy was in charge of the pic nic with Elizabeth Shelton and Emily Hine taking care of the program and food, respectively. Another event on the Astro social calendar is the wedding of Ima New Girl to Mr. Astro- tekton. The following invita tion has been sent to the new students: “Mr. and Mrs. Mere dith request the honour of your presence at the marriage, of their daughter, Ima New Girl, to Mr. Astrotekton on Saturday, the thirtieth of September, 194A, at nine o’clock in the evening. Astro Hall.'* Florine Ledford has charge of the plans for wedding and is assisted by Annie Catherine Barden, Mary Currin, Betsy McMillan, Becky Bames, Wilba Stanfield, Janie Allen, and Jes sie Ieigh Davis helping with arrangements. Jean Grifiith, Laura Frances Snow, and Virginia Maynard have charge of the coming week with regard to rush ni^ts. On decision day Betsy Watson will decorate the auditorium and Hattie Ward will decorate the dining hall. The candle light service to be held on October 2 will be handled by Helen Frances Crain. AA Sponsors Pluy Bay f'or FresHmen The Athletic Association of Meredith College sponsored or ganized sports for the Freshmen class, Friday afternoon, Septem ber 22, on the athletic field and in the gymnasium. Approximately one hundred girls took part in the program which was directed by Miss Doris Peterson with Ruth Martin and Jean Griffith assisting her. A group of students took turns playing ping-pong in the court while dances Wallace had charge of a softball game on the athletic field. Peggy Parker as sisted the girls in paying horse shoes. Besides these outdoor sports led by Miss Elizabeth Cameron, Miss Nell Forbes and Mary Esther Sadler had charge at five o'clock. Can you come? Won't you make it a point to be there? We'd love to have you play so don't let us down. Come on, let’s play hockey!
