STAR STORIES
Once upon a time, as all really
good stories have to begin, there
was a little goat whose name
was Billy Astro. Now Billy was
made of paper mache, and there
fore he could not run and play
like all the other little goats.
But he was not envious of his
living brothers, for Billy was
so-o-o happy being the mascot
of the Astrotekton Society at a
college named Meredith. This
Astro goat was not always still,
though, for one week in every
year he was given power to run
and play and jump. This time
always came during the fall,
when all the new girls at Mere
dith were being rushed for
society membership; and Billy
could hardly wait for this spe
cial week to roll around?
During this week, Billy Astro
had a wonderful time. In the
daytime he was always seen
standing in front of the post-
office at Meredith, guarding all
the letters his Astro girls and
new students were getting. But
at night, this little four-legged
member of the Astro family was
free to run about all over the
campus, helping people in every
way possible. He supervised a
big pep rally, led the candle
light serenade, prepared food
for a picnic supper, why, once
he even ushered for a wedding.
Then every night, when all the
lights had been turned out and
everybody Was fast asleep, Billy
would tiptoe into each room,
sprinkling stardust into the
girls’ eyes so they might have
pleasant dreams. Have you
heard little hoof-beats on your
hall lately? It was only Billy,

chosen Meredith, and we sin
cerely hope that your days here
will be the happiest days of your
life.
We hope you have enjoyed
the Phi bon fire and the fashion

also hope that you have enjoyed
being “rushed” this week. Rush
Week has been significant in
past years for many reasons, but
it is always a wonderful oppor
tunity to meet your class mates
and friends in other classes in
an informal way. I hope you
have made many new friends
this week who will mean much
to you in the days to come.
Tomorrow you will make a
very important decision. You
must decide when you get up
in the morning just what you
will wear and on which side of
the dining hall you wish to eat
your breakfast. We sincerely
hope you will join us in our
“Plain living and high thinking.”
Regardless of your decision we

“We like Meredith,” declare
Meredith’s two new foreign stu
dents, Lillian Lu, an English
major from Shanghai, China,
and dairy Gomer, an education
major from Athens, Greece.
(Glairy, who wants to date
American boys and learn to play
the ukelele, says that she likes
Meredith because “happiness
seems to be spread all around.”
She went to a State pep rally
and to the Carolina-State foot
ball game and enjoyed both
these new experiences, particu
larly the parades and music at
the game. “But,” she says, “I
couldn’t understand why the
cheerleaders screamed anc
jumped up and down.” She was
surprised to see the great num
ber of cars there.
Lillian came to Meredith at
the recommendation of her
teacher in China, Miss Innabel
Coleman. She likes the system
of student work here, with a
large number of students work
ing part of their way through
college, and would like to take
it back to China with her so that
more people could go to college.
She says that they have a work

The Meredith Little Theatre
began the school year with an
on stage party for the new and
old students interested in dra
matics. The officers for the year
were introduced to the students.
They are as follows: Barbara
Cox Harper, president; Potsy
Averre, secretary; Ellen West
moreland, vice-president; Betsy
Cannady, treasurer; and Miss
Judith Mayes, sponsor. For
entertainment Barbara Harper
and Betsy Cannady did a scene
from “Mary Queen of Scots” to
show the serious side of our
work. After that, Sally Massey,
acting as mistress of ceremonies,
introduced some of the new stu
dents who displayed various
talents in a talent show. Every
one seemed to enjoy the program
By Betsy Cannady
and the refreshments that were
served after the program.
When Miss Mayes spoke to
the group, she told of the plans
for the year. There are three
plays under consideration for
the fall production: “Career
Angel,” “My Sister Eileen” and
“Take Care of My Little Girl.”
Any of these plays would pro
vide delightful entertainment
for everyone. Next spring.
Miss Mayes plans to attempt a
Shakespearean drama using an
all girl cast. We hope that it
will be possible to produce some
thing of the great master’s be
cause there seems to be some
interest in having a play of this
type.
