Original Christmas Story (Continued from page 3) must get up. How? By his own ef forts he sensed hopelessness in lift ing himself from the pressing snow. By his own efforts he sensed com plete itiadequacy in overcoming the torments of the wind and flakes. Then it happened. His mother's hand warmed his forehead and the thick blanket she had carried restored some of his body heat through its tightness around his limbs. She had found him. She cared. Her cry “John, John” was met by his response, “Mother.” For the first time, John lying beside the covered Christmas chicken realized his mother’s place. She was the source of his existence because twenty years ago she had given birth to him. She had not left him but rather participated in his history, his daily life. Now in his sense of inadequacy, she had found him and lifted him from the snow. John’s eyes were numb, along with the rest of his body. TTie lan tern carried by his mother was seen as a pale light, bright enough to lead them home seeing only glimpses in the dark, moonless night. They left. John grasped his mother’s hand, then swung the dug-up Christmas chicken over his back and pro ceeded to squint as he was led by the pale light and the presence of his mother. ‘Three more turns and we’ll be home,” John whispered to his mother.
