JANUARY 25, 1979 THE TWIG PAGE 3 Student gains recognition by Mary Katherine Pittman Lisa Barker has clearly shown that she is not afraid to accpet a challenge. Because of her interest in gifted and talented children, she has grown in two short years from an ambitious sophomore doing a summer research project - to a U.S. government consultant to the Office of the Gifted and Talented. Working with Dr. Lyn Aubrecht, Lisa researched the attitudes and particular problems of parents with gifted and talented children. She and Dr. Aubrecht presented three papers last year which dealt with gifted and talented education. Last summer, Lisa worked an as administrative intern in the Office of Gifted and Talented U.S. Office of Education, Washington, D.C. She served as a consultant to parents and educators requesting federal funding for gifted and talented programs in their local school districts. She also studied particular cases and prepared a bibliography for parents of gifted and talented children. Lisa is currently the assistant director of P.A.G.E. (Parents for the Ad vancement of Gifted Education). This is an enrich ment program offered on Saturdays for gifted children, ages three - nine, in the Raleigh area. She has also been asked to be a Special consultant to the Presidential Scholars of 1979. In this program she will be hostess tor selected children and their families. Lisa will become the first person at Meredith to receive a K-3 certificate with a special endorsement in gifted and talented education. This endorsement has been ap proved by the State Depart ment of Public Instruction. Lisa highly recommends the program: “Gifted and talented is a fantastic option. You cannot teach the gifted and talented without a cer tificate and with the way the job market is now, your chances of finding a job are much better if you have some sort of endorsement.” According to Dr. Aubrecht, “There is the possibility that more students may do the same thing with learning disabilities. Year after year, a number of students have received education degrees at Meredith, and because they can’t get a degree in special education, they must go to graduate school. Lisa was the first to seek out such an en dorsement.” Dr. Aubrecht is highly complimentary of Lisa; “She is a clearly outstanding student and has accomplished an incredible amount in two years. The same opportunities that we available to Lisa are available to many Meredith students today.” Lisa Barker Performing Arts: Auditions and Casting Dancers needed to andition by Dana Warren Where are all the dan cers?? Instructor Debbie Whelan reports that the turn out for auditions for the Meredith Dance Repertory Ensemble were very slim. A second audition is being held, Monday, January 29th at 4 p.m. in the Dance Studio. All people who can dance and are willing to put forth the initiative to work are urged to audition. The type of dancing that the Ensemble will be doing is a combination between modern and ballet. They are currently working on new dances, improvisation, and choreography. “A Day for Dance,” a special program, will be held March 14. At this time dif ferent schools will present a dance routine to show their skills. Since there was such a ^ood turn out last semester to the Ensemble Recital, the group will give a recital for three nights this semester. The dates for the recital are April 26, 27, and 28. The dancers will be presenting Ridgewood Beauty Shop Ridgewood (Shopping Center 833-4632 some new dances and a few repeats from last semester.
