DECEMBER 6, 1979 THE TWIG PAGE? Volleyball team wins 3rd plaee in State Championship by Kim Denton The State Volleyball Tournament for Division III was held at St. Andrews, Friday and Saturday on Novembe 9-10. The Angels 'qualified for play on both days, meeting Wingate and Methodist on Friday and N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday. Friday, November 9th, the Meredith team were victors over Wingate as a result of winnir^ two out of the three games in the match. This win put the Angels up against undefeated Methodist. Meredith whipped Methodist with a score of IS-ll and 15-11, forcing, Methodist to surrender their previous unblemished record. The two victories put Meredith in the winners’ bracket at the end of day one of the tourney. Coach Marie Chamblee said that the team was excited about both games and played both well, of fensively and defensively. On Saturday, November 10th, Meredith met N.C. Wesleyan, who defeated the Angel team. Meredith lost with score of 15-11 and 15-11. Coach Chamblee commented, “We didn’t play well against Wesleyan. Our defense was slow and our offense didn’t set up properly.” This loss put Meredith in the losers’ bracket, where they were matched once again against Methodist. Meredith lost this match in the semi-finals, with score of 15-13, 8-15, and 13-15. Coach Chamblee remarked, “We played well against Methodist; the win could have gone either way.” Thus, the Meredith Volleyball Team placed third in the Division III State Volleyball Cham pionship. Out of the six positions available for the All Tour nament Team, Meredith was awarded with two of them. Cathy Wright, team captain. and Maria Teren were both named to the All Tournament Team. With the conclusion of the 1979 Volleyball Season, the Meredith team selected Cathy Wright as their Most Valuable Player. The MVP award is determined by the vote of all the team members.
