PAGES THE TWIG DECEMBER 6, 1979 Golfers place 2nd in NCAIAW State Golf Championship by Darla Stephenson Duke Fall Invitational The Meredith Golf Team travelled to and played on the Duke University Golf Course on October I7th-19th, where the Meredith squad placed 9th in the tournament. According to Coach Fred Thompson, the weather was perfect and the course was in good shape for the 9-teamed tourney to get underway. Although Meredith placed last in the major tournament, which consisted of teams such as UNC-Chapel HUl, Duke University, Wake Forest, UNC-Wilmington, Ap palachian State University, James-Madison, William and Mary, Longwood, and Meredith, Coach Thompson was very encouraged by the outcome. Four Meredith records were broken! The first broken record included Rebecca Baucom, who had the lowest 9-hole score, 40 strokes, ever by a Meredith student in a tour nament Secondly, Rebecca broke another record with a score of 90 strokes, the lowest 18-hole score ever at Meredith. According to Coach Thompson, after the front line, Rebecca was in 3rd place in the individual overall competition. A third record which was broken was the low team aggragate for the first day, which was a score of 383 strokes. The final broken record consisted of the lowest second day team aggregate score ever at Meredith which was 394 strdies. Meredith was represented by golfers Rebecca Baucom; Peggy Williford, Kathy Riebsimon, Mary Cobb, Jan Gardner, and Beverly Moss. Coach Thompson said that the two Freshman, Peggy Williford and Kathy Rieb simon had a little difficulty in adjusting to their first day in their first “biggie” tour nament; however, he was very pleased with the overall performances of them both. Duke University won the tourney with a score of 634, while Wake Forest finished second. State Golf Championship: 2nd PlflCC The NCAUW State Golf Championship is annually held in Pinehurst, N.C. at Pinehurst Country Club, course No. 5. Pinehurst, Uie ultimate of every golfer, provided Meredith golfers with many reasons for en thusiasm and satisfaction about the close of a difficult season Friday, November 9th -Sunday, November 11th. This year, Meredith placed an overall 2nd in Division III, shy of first place by about 50 strokes. More Broken Records At the end of day one of the tourney, Meredith’s total team score was 377 strokes, only 4 strdtes out of first place. Coach Fred Thompson was particularly pleased with strong performances by Coming For Christmas. Peggy Williford, Mary Cobb, and Jan Garner, whom he felt played their best competitive rounds ever. Also at the end of day one, Meredith had 4 contenders in the individual second flight championship. Peggy Williford was in 4th place, Jan Gardner in 5th, Mary Cobb 6th, and Kathy Reibsimon in 8th place. It was the first time ever that so many Meredith golfers were in the top ten of . flight. With Sunday, out went the sunshine and in came the rain. According to Coach Thomp son, there was water standing everywhere on the course, even on upslope hills. To meet the 27-hole requirement for a State Championship Tour nament, Meredith golfers were forced to play 9 holes in the cold, rainy weather. Thompson believes it had a very definite effect in Meredith’s score, although he was pleased with the Angels’ play under conditions in which they had never played before. UNC-Chapel Hill won the Division I championship and UNC-Wilmington took Division III, with Meredith finishing in second place behind them. Coach Thompson was enthusiastic about the team and their progress. He said he really felt like they now have their “foot out of the cellar’’ and other scholls will be forced to look at Meredith and take them seriously in in tercollegiate competition. In taking an overall look at the 1979 fall golf season the Angels placed 3rd at a tri match at UNC-W, defeated St. Mary’s in a two-way match, placed 9th at the Duke Fall Invitational Tournament, and 2nd in Division II at the Pinehurst State Cham pionship. The Meredith Golf Spring Schedule tentatively includes matches \vith Longwood, UNC-W, and perhaps Wake Forest. Sam Brewer, the club pro for Raleigh Country Club, is presently working with the golfers. Because he is a teaching professional and extremely patient. Coach Thompson thinks “he’s going to help a lot.” Anyone in terest^ in playing with the Meredith team, contact Fred Thompson, ext. 295 or Central Services on 3rd floor of Johnson Hall.
