Created in 1971 by Moses Pendleton and Jonathan Wolken, while both were undergraduates at Dartmouth College and students in Alison Chase’s choreography class, Pilobolus made its American Dance Festival debut as part of ADF’s “Emerging Generation” series in 1973. In a few short years the company has gone on to perform around the world and to play to sold- out houses on Broadway. It has performed at ADF every summer since 1973. The scene of over 200 premieres by many of the world’s greatest choreographers, the American Dance Festival began in 1934 in Bennington, Vt. where it provided residences to pioneering dance artists such as Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, Doris Humphrey, Jose Limon and Charles Weidman to create new works, to teach and develop their individual dance techniques. In 1948 the Festival re-opened in New London, Conn., where it once again nurtured the talents of our greatest choreographers, and was the scene of the first performances of such im portant classics as Martha Graham’s “Diversion of Angels,” Jose Limon’s “The Moors Pavane,” Merce Cunningham’s “Sum- merspace,” Paul Taylor’s “Aureole,” and Doris Humphrey’s “Airs and Graces,” among countless others. In addition to Pilobolus, the Festival is also responsible for nurturing the talents of young choreographers and dance companies such as 'Twyla Tharp, Meredith Monk, and Yvonne Rainer. The Festival moved to Durham in 1978. “The American Dance Festival: Pilobolus” is a production of the South Carolina ETV Newtwork in association with the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina and WNET-13 in New York City. This program has been made possible by a grant from the James G. Hanes Memorial Fund.
