College degrees worth more than good jobs MADISON, Wl (CPS) - College degrees are worth much nwe than most people think, a new study by two University of Wisconsin economists asserts. “The actual return on irwi- estnwit is probably 1 SO perc^t. greater than the standard esti mate,” says Rotjert Hak/eman, who co-authorized the study of the economk: effects of a col lege education with Wisconsin colleague Bart)ara Wolfe. By contrast, the Heritage Foundation - a conservative think tank with ties to the Reagan administration recently called fa* ttie federal government to stop supporting puMic education because it costs HDore that it generates in additional revenues for the American economy. But a recent study by the U.S. Census Bureau found that dsllege graduates eam about 40 percent more over a lifetime than non-grads. Haveman and Wolfe s^ degrees may be worth even more than that when they figure in the additional values of using what people leam in college In their post-graduate lives. “Additional education is diiBctty related to better health, the success of (the graduate's) chiklren fn school, and a number of other benefits that have not traditionally been counted as part of the value of education,” Haveman says. Better health, for instance, is worth an additional $3000 a year to college grads, he found. TT>eir kkis' better academic per formance is worth about $2000. By t)eing smarter con- umers, grads save about $100 a year, Haveman and Wolfe con tend. They also calculated values for better family planning, -greater involvement in conri- munity and charitable causes, and less likelihood of criminal behavior among educated FAIRCLOTH ^Governor *84 919/834-8484 Members of the winning Qradford Qrabbers wait on the sidelines.
