PAGE 6 SePTeMBER 17, 1984 ENTERTAINMENT Thefma Watkins'cheery smile brightens Le Greenhouse Choirgirl’s heart belongs to rock by 'Ua Braganza The roles of women in the music industry have been generally limited to all female bands, like the GoGos or Rock Goddess, and otherwise all-malegroups in which women sing lead or backup vocals. However, a few groups that feature female muslciar>s have sun/lved - for example, the band that plays with Bily Idol. Idol’s keytx>aFdi8t, Judi Dozier, studied classical piano for 14 years before turning her interest In rock music into a career. Miss Dozier says the other members of Idol’s band treat her like a musician, but also give her the freedom to feel feminine and wear high heels. She says she was afraid at first that the girls in the audience wouldn't like her being a member of the iiand; “I thought they'd be snippy, but the girls are really responding well to me.” She says they feel encouraeed when they see her performing with a majority male band. Miss Dozier says she would like to see more girls get involved in ro^, and ad- ises anyone who's interested to "hang In there, and evm if you’re starving, just do It and do It. In keeping with the international flavor of the Festival's 1964 season, its month-long Jap^ese residency will include worltshops in Shikoku (August 9-11); Os£da (August 1&-18); and Tokyo (August 19-31). There will also be perforrrances in Tokyo by Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, and Crowsnest, which will be highlighted by the world premiere of Ms. Dean’s ‘Trio.” The workshops in Japan will include classes in American modem dance, inv rovlsatiCHi, repertory. Jazz, the body therapies and injury prevention. Faculty members will include Ralf Haze, Betty Jones, Kei Takei, Bella Lewitzsky, Martha Myers and Ruby Shahg, with Yoko Kondo and S^urr^ Hagiwara joining the faculty in Tokyo to teach Japanese folk dance classes and conduct video photography workshops. The Shikoku resider>cy, sponsored by the Yu Dance Company and organized by Kei Takei, will run August 9-11 ax) vtrill include informal talks and video presentations by Charles and Stephanie Reinhart and Martha Myers. On August IS the ADF-Japan will travel to Osaka for a four-day worttshop (August 15-18) before moving on to Tokyo on August 19. The Tokyo residency will include two weeks of classes and workshops (August 19-31) at the In- emational Christian University. Most ADF-Japan performances will take place in Tokyo beginning with Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians August 17-19 at Toronomon Hall where Ms. Dean will premiere “Tiio.” TTie Dean Company will also hold wcKkshops at Kochigochi Communith College on August 19 and 20. Crowsnestr will continue the ADF- Japan performance schedule with four perfonnances at Sogetsu Hall In Tokyo, August 21-24. Crowsnest will present a lecture and workshop at Kochigochi, August 25-26, before traveling to Fukuoka for one performance at the city's civic center on August 28. TT>e Japan program is the second part of an exchange program with Japan which began in 1982 v^n the ADF brought four Japanese groups to the Festival to per- orm. The Japan residency is an extension of the ADF's 50th anniversary season in Durham, North Carolina (June lOOuly 21) which Included the First International Modem Dance Festival. The ADF hosted companies from India, the Philippines, Great Britain, Indonesia and France during the six weeks. The ADF-Japan program is supported by the Japan United States Friendship Commission; the Japanese Dance Critic’s Association; the Contemporary Dance Association of Japan and the Yu Modem Dance Company of Shikoku. At the close of the ADF-Japan residency, Charles and Steptianie Reinhart and Ruby Shang will travel to the People's Republic of China to look at contemporary dance companies in China. Their three- week visit is at the invitatkm of the Chinese government.
