Meredith staff members welcome home their cliildren from the Gulf. by Nkok Klrenberk Mrs. Mary Ann Beam, secretaiy to the OfHce of the Vice Piesident Student Development, has a son in Saudi Arabia waiting ^ turn K> come home. He is a member of the Public Affairs and left for the Middle East in December of 1990. He plans to cetum to Raleigh by theend of^xiL He specializes in preparing videotapes for various reporters tiiat have bran broadcasting from Saudi. Mrs. Beam said that I don't know if ru say anything when I see him, but I do know hell get a great big hug and kiss!” Mrs. Marge Newland works in the registraf*s oflfice. Her oldest daughter, Sandy, is a First lieutenant officer in the Air Force ^o just recently returru d home. As a nurse, Sandy was given orders to woric in Germany, thus she had the c^poitunity to come home on Febmary 14 before the ground war started. A couple of weeks later Sandy was on her way to Germany, but that time gave the Newlands some time to throw a party for Sandy’s return. Mrs. Maige Stevens, lesideru director of Poteat, has a sone who is invtdved in the radio-radar activity in piloting and who has |ust returned from the Middle East Mrs. Stevens recalls when she Hrst found out about her son's remm to the U.S. "My son called and began with, ‘I bet you don't know where I am.' I told him, 'No, I don't I just figured you would be in Saudi.' Thai's when he told be that he was just flown into $t Louis and would be home soon. Thats the most wonderful feeling, to know your son is fmally safe.* Winners of the freshman-sophomore math competition announced The Winners of the freshman* sophomore math competition were recently announced at the Canaday Math Club meeting. Stephanie Hopkins, a freshman Harris Scholar and honor soident, was named the Hrst prize winner. Stephanie has declared her major in mathematics and she plans to teach math on the secondary school level. The second place winner was Mary Dana Morrill. Mary Dana, a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society is a sophomore who plans to jnajor in mathematics and then further >her education by going to graduate school and earning a Ph.D. in mathematics. In addition to the first and second prize scholarship awards, there were also four book a^rds given to winners in the competition. Jelena Martinovic, a sophomore Rotary Scholarship winner from Yug»lavia, won the special book prize that was givert Katherine Gu, Kelly Phillips, both sophomore, and Tiffany Short, freshman, were all recipients of Honorable Book Awards. Katherine is a student from the Peoples Republic of China where she plans to teach business in English. IWany has plans to double major in biology and mathematics while Kelly is majoring in history and minoring in mathematics.
