November 4,1992 page five Campus Sports Basketball team anticipates strong season by Kate Stewart The 1992-93 Meredith Bas ketball season is about to get under way. According to Basketball Coach Carl Hatchell, the Angels have a chance at having a very good season. He thinks that this year’s team is the best that Meredith has ever had, with several returning players from last year and some good new members who will make Meredith a legitimate competitor this year. Coach Hatchell does have a few concerns about this year’s team as they have no depth at the point guard and they have some players who will be coming off injuries. Among this year’s return ees are Co-Captains Slyvia Newman, who averaged 31 points a M C T V game last year, and Jennifer Norris, who was a big part of last year’s squad until her unfortunate knee injury. Both are looking forward to this season, and Norris in particular says that her knee is recovering well from surgery, al though it is not quite yet 100%. An other returnee, Jenny Stoneham, also has high hopes for this season as jShe is excited about the new players and the deep bench that Meredith will have, of which the team could not take advan tage of during last season. Other re turning players are Leslie Cox, who is also coming off of a knee problem, Rachel Gilley, and Luaime Cable. This year’s new players are Amy Whitt, Carla Black, Karen Smith, and Emily Brown. Whitt is a sopho more who is coming off a tom achilles tendon and Carla Black, a senior trans fer who will be able to contribute to the team. Brown is is recovering from a knee injury, but good things are expected from her. Smith in particular is looking forward to the season as she feels that Meredith has a good team this year. She also wants to be a strong factor and wants to be able to con tribute to the team in a positive way. Due to NCAA regulations, practice did not begin until Nov. 1, instead of the usual Oct. 15. Practice time was cut substainially because of the late start, but it should not affect the team too much.
