Computing director offers information by Ruth Ann Balia, Director of Academic Computing Note: This will be a biweekly column containing information on what’s available and how to use computers on the campus of Meredith College. The Harris Building houses three computer laboratories. One laboratory is on the first floor — room 102. This lab contains 22 computers. Sixteen of these ma chines have hard disks and have WordPerfect 5.1. The other ma chines have floppy drives and stu dents must use diskettes to load software. This lab is used for word processing, by students in Com puter Science 111 Computers and Their Uses, and in general for any software that runs from floppy disks. The lab that previously was in Harris 104 was moved to Harris 206. This lab contains twelve 80386-classmicrocomputers. This room is primarily used for soft ware that needs to be loaded on a hard ■ disk to run or for software that requires a faster processor. Main users of the room are students in mathematics classes. Other users include students in business courses (both graduate and undergraduate), students in computer science courses, and students in sociol ogy and politics courses who are using SPSS for statistical analysis. This summer, the lab that previ ously housed the terminals for the mini computer was upgraded. Harris 217B now has eight 80486-class microcom puters. This lab is used by students in statistics courses, computer science courses, students in the numerical analy sis course, and studentsinthe tax course. Both of the labs on the second floor of the Harris building have com bination locks on the doors. The pur pose of the locks is to protect the com puters from unauthorized use, destruc tion, and theft. The locks are NOT to stop any Meredith student from using the machines. Any student that needs access to the lab can get the combina tion from their professor. If you are not in a class that requires use of the lab but want to use the lab, please con tact me and I’ll make arrangements for your access. Just as with most resources, computer resources at Meredith are limited BUT with proper use (and conservation) the resources are available. Tlie point of using certain machines for certain purposes is to make the best use of our resources. If you have suggestions — I’d like to hear them. In future columns. I’ll be dis cussing in more detail what soft ware is available in each lab. I’ll also be discussing lab policies. Since WordPerfect 5.1 is new this year. I’ll spend a few columns on tips and tricks using WordPerfect 5.1. If you have questions about using comput ers, software, or just have a topic you would like me to cover—please, let me know. Either send me a note (Ruth Aim Balia, Harris Building) or leave a message on my voice mail (2803). Happy Computing!
