Meredith Heratd September 1,1999 8 Campus Extras A maple tree behind Johnson Hall lost a limb in the heavy winds on Monday afternoon. The winds were a result of Hurricane Dennis, which was off the coast of North Car olina. Harry Cadman, manager of Grounds Services, said that the tree was weak due to a lightening strike several years ago. Grounds Services removed the broken limb on Tuesday morning. Photo by Lesue Maxwei.i Roads paved during summer Leslie Maxwell Editor in chief According lo Harry Cadman. manager of grounds services, tfie road connecting to Faircloth Street at the back gate was repaved toward the end of July and the first of August, openiog in time for the fresh men to move in. Cadman said that the road is finished except for seeding the roadsides, which the grounds crew will begin in the next few weeks. Cadman called this seeding “erosion control matting.” Cadman also reported that the city is repaving and widening Faircloth Street. When completed, Fair cloth Street will have a turn lane and a new sidewalk from Wade Avenue to Hillsborough Street. When the city is through with its work on Faircloth Street, then the grounds crew will put up the remainder of Meredith’s chain-link fence. If it was up now. Cadman said, it would probably get flattened due to the construction equipment. As it ^ands now, about half of the fencing is up. In addition to the paving of the Faircloth Street exit, the grounds crew also paved the road between I'acilities Services and the Dining Hall. Cadman said that they reconstructed the loading dock behind the cafeteria to make it easier for large trucks to maneuver. This project, Cadman said, was started before graduation. During this project, the grounds crew also relocated the main natural gas meters further away from the road “for safety reasons,” according to Cadman. Previously, Cadman said, the meters were only about seven feet away from the road. This section of road was also repaved because, according to Cadman, it is the beginning of a future l(K>p that will eventually be constructed behind the softball field and tennis courts. A plan for a new park ing lot in the current softball field is also something that grounds services will be working on. Cadman said that he hopes to have the proposal for the parking lot to the trustees this fall. Take a trip up to ‘Scotland Road’ Lisa Gilliam Arts & Entertainmenl EcMor A woman from the 19th cen tury is found alive, floating on an iceberg. An obsessed man turns a gas station into a hospi tal. And yet another man changes his entire identity to pose as a little old woman. If any of these occurences seem strange or interesting, then Raleigh Little Theatre’s pro duction of Scotland Road is definitely a play to go see. The play opens in the year 1992 in what appears to be a one r(K)m hospital. The stage is set with a hand-made replica of a Titanic deck chair. Dr. Hal- brech. a supposed medical practitioner played by Renee Church, and John, played by Rob Jenkins, the alleged descendant ol the prestigious John Jacob Aster, begin the play by talking about the latest news in a tabloid magazine. And that latc.st news is what the next 3/4 of the play is cen tered around. The “doctor” and John discuss the latest discov ery of a woman who is found in 19th century clothing, floating on an iceberg in the Atlantic. Yes. a woman found float ing, after eighty years, on an iceberg, clothing in tact, not one gray hair, skin as smooth as if she were twenty. This mysterious woman, played by Aerin Bender-Stone, is suppos edly a survivor of the RMS Titanic, the largest, fastest, “unsinkable" cruiseliner that actually did sink in 1912. Thus, the job of John comes into the play. John is supposed ly the great-grandson of John Jacob Aster, one of the men who died on the Titanic. And “supposed” is the key word. In his obse.ssion with the Titanic, John tries to uncover the truth about the my.sterious woman. He even goes so far as lo hire the supptKsed Dr. Halbrtch to find out whether the Titanic woman is a real person or a fraud- Mystery after strange mys tery unfolds as John undertakes his quest. The play was somewhat of a mystery to me until after the play when I discussed the end ing with my friend. However, it is that mystery that makes Scotland Road one of the most intriguing plays the Little The atre has put on. The set is sim ple yet effective. The cast is only four but outstanding. And the lighting, done by Stece Dubay, sets a true Titanic scene. All of these elements together make for a very enjoy- abe production. Scotland Road, by Jeffrey Hatcher, is directed by Maggie Resnick. There will be eight more productions of the play in the Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre of the Raleigh Little Theatre. Showdates and times are; September 1-4 and Sep tember 8-11, all showing at 8pm. Tickets are ten dollars and can be purchased by call ing 821-3111. Campus Rep Program Seoltle, WA 800>487-2434 Ext. 4444 Red Hot Chili Peppers scorch charts with album Kristen Bosteix) Siati Writer Califomicalion. the Red Hot Chili Peppers new album, is an emotionally provoking album that breaks new ground for the band. If you are a Chili Pep pers fan of old, you can see some major differences in their' sound and technique on this new release. The album could be consid ered as having depressing undertones so if you love upbeat rhythms and loud lyrics, the new Chili Peppers album will not be among your favorites. “Scar Tissue,” a relea.sed single from the album, uses loneliness as its main theme: “With the birds 1 share this lonely view.” One of the other singles from Califomicalion. “Other Side” has the same slow slightly blue undertone. Although you can feel the bleakness of the record, it is far from a blues recording. The Chili Peppers stray into a more alternative pop scene, a sound that in previous records they have tried to stay away from. A fan can see the differences within the Chili Peppers style by comparing Blood Sugar Sex Magik to Califomication. The former album was more hard core. Flea, the Chili Peppers bassist, was extremely proud of the emotionally intense record that they were able to produce (MTV News Woodstock 99). “Scar Tissue,” which has been on the charts for eleven weeks and is yet again at num ber one conveys their changing sound the best of any of their songs. The song has constant play on the top forty stations, which opens up a wider audi ence, creating new Chili Pep per fans. With songs out like “Living La Viva I.x>ca,” it is interesting to see a more alter native band steal the spotlight. Some Chili Peppers fans may be disappointed in the pro gression of the bands sound. With their more alternative pop beat they lose the heavier rock beats that made up their earlier music. Changing a band’s sound, however, is part of evolving, a task the Chili Peppers have been able to do for many years. They do not lose their essence by changing, instead they open up their music to a wider range of listeners. If you want to hear an alter native to Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys, Californica- tion is a good place lo start because it places a deeper emphasis on the darker side of our emotions.
