Meredith Herald February 2, 2000 8 Campus Extras Tarzan swings, moves with ease Leslie Maxwell Editor In cnisf On Tuesday. Feb. 1, the Disney studios released its 37th full-length animated pic ture: Tarzan. Though the story line is familiar to most (i.e.. Jungle boy meets English girl, they fall in love and want lo stay together), Disney brings it lo life. The story, based on the classic tale by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is one that both chil dren and adults will enjoy. The movie is tilled with action and is quite fast-paced; children will especially enjoy its speed. However, the jokes are for adults, und the love story between Jane and Tarzan is one that all will appreciate. Tarzan, voiced by Tony Goldwin, is sen sitive. brave and stubborn. He must save the gorillas that raised him without threatening their safely as the English people come to Africa. Jane, voiced by British actress Minnie Driver, is thoughtful and conscientious, unlike her father and his counterparts. Terk, Tarzan’s best gorilla friend, has a voice familiar to daytime talk show viewers: that of Rosie O'Donnell. Terk is level-head ed and tries to give Tar/an advice whether he wants it w not. Kala, Tarzan's gorilla mother, voiced by Glenn Close, is one of the best characters. Understanding, loving and soft, she only wants what is best for her son. Tantor, voiced by Wayne Knight of “Hello, Newman" (Seinfeld) fame, plays Tantor, the elephant friend of Tarzan and Terk. Phil Collins provides the music, complete with African instruments and beats (though his are not quite as polished as Paul Simon’s). “You'll Be In My Heart.” a single from the movie, hit the Top 40. When released into theaters last summer, Tarzan attracted favorable reviews. Many felt that it was one of the best Disney movies since Aladdin’s release in 1992. The animation in Tarzan is incredible; the story has a good message. While those who have read the literary work may not appreciate this version, it is still a quality film. Some parts of the film may not be suitable for small children, especially the beginning, which shows deaths and a scary leopard. For those who are not Disney fans, this movie may be a rare treat. The quality of its animation and story line are nearly flawless, and it will become one of those Disney classics like Bambi, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Pinocchio or Cinderella.
