April 5, 2000 Meredith Herald Campus Extras 5 Softball team comes back from losses Betsy Rhame Staff Writer On Tuesday. Mar. 28. Meredith’s softball team lost both games in a double header against Averett College, bring ing their record to 10-3. “Even though we lost we’re not really discouraged because we’ll play them again," said junior Leigh Akers, who plays first base for the Angels. Freshman third baseman Adrienne Lafone agrees. “We didn't hit well in cither game,” she admitted. The team currently has three players out because of injury. Jack Huber, an assistant coach, believes that the rest of the team will step up to fini.sh out the rest of the season. "We’re facing the toughest part uf the season with the low est number of players,” said Huber. Despite the injuries and recent losses, the team has stayed focused. “The past two practices we’ve really been cheering each other on,” Lafone said. “We life each other up no mat ter what." Huber concurs. ‘This has been a team that has bounced back from adversity well,” he said. In the last three weeks of the season, the Angels will face lough competition in their games against NC Wesleyan, Averett and Campbell’s junior varsity team. ‘Those are probably the only tough competiiion we have left that have been hard in the past," Akers said. Huber remains optimistic that the Angels are ready for the rest of the season. “This team has had more depth than years past. Every one is experienced and a good ball player," he said. “There’s not anyone that's not a good ball player." Meredith’s softball team plays at home earlier this week. They are preparing for the end of the season.
