Meredith Herald April 5, 2000 Campus Opinion Spring anything but restful From the Spring is supposed to be a time of peacefulness, of reflection and of wandering "lonely as a cloud," as William Wordsworth so gently said. But in this, the first week of April, the schedules are more hectic and the people more harried than at most other times of I Editor I the year I 1 Freshmen have fretted over the compe tency test, sophomores and juniors over unfmished research papers, untaken tests and exams and summer plans. Seniors spend nights awaiting that letter, that phone call to say “Congratulations! You have been admitted to...” or “You have been selected to be our newest....” And sometimes those calls and letters bring the wrong news. Summer is just peering on the horizon: the sun is setting later, and the air is already tinged with humidity. But it is hard for most to look past the next few days. “If I can only make it to the end of this week.” we say. "my life will be so much better." We prepare for campus events; Crook Hunt, Stunt, Inaugura tion, fundraisers. Class Day. picnics. We plan for those tests, those papers. And time escapes. We worry so much about how the event or assignment will turn out that we forget to enjoy the event itself or forget that “It’s only a test” (or paper or project). The seventeen days of class that remain will go by in a flurry. They will bring late nights, stress, happiness and sadness. Seniors anticipate their graduation but are occasionally struck with a long ing for the past. Juniors look ahead to the year to come b‘ut see the GRE, the graduate school applications, the job interviews and the resumes. Sophomores see little sisters in the future, where they also see being a year closer to the real world. Freshmen see the chance to know things, to be upperclassmen. But they see another year behind them, and a final year as a teenager. Though our schedules rarely permit reflection time, there is no better lime to reflect than when we are busy, than when we are rushed. Though we may not always see that “host of lovely daf fodils" that Wordsworth saw. we can still imagine it. Meredith Herald £dit«’ iii Chief- Leitie Max well News Eciitor. Campus forum CamCard policies need adjustments Dear Editor; I had no idea how important my CamCard was until the day that 1 was temporarily without mine. 1 went hungry twice because without my CamCard. I found that I could not eat in the dining hall! Despite the fact that I am a resident student and have already paid for my meals, without my CamCard, 1 cannot eat. This is money down the drain! 1 am infuriated at my experience because; 1. The rule of not being able to eat without showing one's CamCard is not publicized. A student fmds out that she will not be able to eat only when she is turned away from the dining hall. This is disappoint ing and embarrassing. 2. The rule is not followed by all of the dining hall, employees. If the dining hall is going to have a rule, the employees need to enforce it consistently. It is unfair and confusing when some of the students without their Cam- Cards get to eat only because they deal with a lenient dining hall employee. 3. Even though I am in the dining hall every day and was recognized by the employee, the lady who turned me away informed me that in addition to not being allowed to eat, I was not permitted to even sit in the dining hall. I would really like to see the implementation of a uniform policy that allows students who have either misplaced or had their CamCards stolen to be able to eat the meals they have paid for.
